Paediatrics is a branch of medicine that focuses on care for children, infants and adolescents. It can be divided into four areas. General paediatrics focuses on your child’s care from their birth up to the age of 16, while neonatology specialises in care for newborns. Paediatric cardiology is another specialism that provides treatment and diagnosis for children with heart problems. Alternatively, community paediatrics supports children that have developmental or behavioural problems.

In the UK, children and young people form a quarter of our population. At Circle Health Group, we are proud to support our paediatricians with diagnosing and treating conditions in children. Our paediatric Consultants use different diagnostic tests to assess and diagnose your child.

The most common reasons for why your child might need paediatric treatment include:

Bowel conditions

Bowel conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can cause diarrohea, constipation and bloating. A colonoscopy can used to find out the cause of your child’s bowel symptoms.

Undescended testicles

This is a childhood condition that occurs when your child’s testicles have not shifted down into their scrotum. If left untreated, it can lead to an increased risk of developing testicular cancer. An orchidopexy is performed to correct undescended testicles.

Umbilical hernia

This is a painless lump that can develop in or around your child’s belly button. A hernia repair is used to treat an umbilical hernia.

This is a fluid-filled sac that can form around your child’s testicle. If it causes discomfort, surgery may be recommended.

Being in hospital can be a daunting experience, and especially for children, but you can rest assured you are in safe hands. Your child’s paediatric Consultant will carry out an in-depth assessment of their condition before discussing treatments options for your child. This can help establish the best treatment for them.

At Circle Health Group, treatment for paediatric disorders will be carried out by our multidisciplinary team, comprising dedicated paediatric urologists, paediatric dietitians and paediatric doctors. Our team at Circle Health Group, will work with you to ease anxiety for you and your child – our aim is to keep your child’s stay in hospital as reassured and short as possible.

Gastroscopy and a colonoscopy

Your child’s paediatrician will carry out a gastroscopy and a colonoscopy to diagnose symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrohea. It is usually performed while your child is under general anaesthetic, meaning that they are asleep. During a gastroscopy, a narrow tube (less than the thickness of your little finger) is passed through your child’s mouth and into their stomach. It allows a paediatrician to examine your child’s oesophagus, stomach and duodenum (the first section of the small intestine) [7]. A colonoscopy examines your child’s colon (bowel). A thin tube is passed into the bowel through your child’s bottom to diagnose bowel symptoms.

Your child will be given general anaesthetic, meaning they will be asleep during the procedure. A  paediatrican will make a small cut on your child’s groin. Their testicle will then be shifted downwards, and a second incision will be made to reposition their testicle in the scrotum. These incisions are closed with dissolvable stitches.

Hernia repair

General anaesthetic is given to prevent any pain induced by this procedure, and it typically takes 20 to 30 minutes. A small incision is made around your child’s belly button and the lump is pushed back into your child’s stomach. Dissolvable stitches are used to seal the wound.

Hydrocele repair

A small incision is made on your child’s scrotum. The fluid from the hydrocele is drained. It is turned inside out and stitched to hold it in place. This prevents a build-up of fluid. Sometimes, your child’s hydrocele may be completely removed. Hydrocele repair is carried out under general anaesthetic.
