A tongue-tie occurs when a strip of tissue (skin) connects the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth, preventing the tongue from moving freely.

In some cases, a tongue-tie may not cause any issues, however, in other cases it can restrict the movement of the tongue therefore making it difficult to breastfeed.

If a tongue-tie is present, you may notice problems with breastfeeding as your baby is unable to open their mouth wide enough to latch on to the breast properly.

You may also notice the following:

• Difficulty latching on to the breast or staying latched on for the full feed
• Breaks in between a feeding session
• Your baby may seem hungry all the time
• Improper weight gain, not gaining enough weight
• Difficulty lifting the tongue or moving the tongue side-to-side
• Difficulty sticking the tongue out
• A ‘heart shaped’ tongue when stuck out

If your baby has a tongue-tie but is feeding without any problems, you may not need to consider any treatment.

If you notice that your baby’s tongue-tie is causing problems, and is impacting their ability to feed properly, you may want to consider a tongue-tie release.

At Thornbury Hospital, we offer a straightforward and almost painless tongue-tie release procedure with noticeable effects on your baby’s feeding almost immediately. It involves a specialist consultant snipping the skin that attaches the tongue to the floor of the mouth.

Our tongue-tie release service is offered by Mr Simon Carr, Consultant ENT Surgeon, and is carried out as an outpatients procedure.

A specialist paediatric nurse will be present to support you and your baby throughout the whole procedure, and to assist you with the first feed afterwards.

To prepare for the tongue-tie release, you will need to ensure you do not feed your baby before the consultation and to bring milk feed with you. This is because you will need to feed your baby straight after the procedure.

The bowels play an important role in maintaining your child’s general health from birth. Poo can tell us a lot about our body such as are we drinking enough and eating enough fibre.

Research shows many of us have no idea how to spot a common poo problem such as constipation. We find it uncomfortable to talk about and this can make it tricky to know if something is wrong and how to get help.

We have two dedicated and specialist children’s nurses who deliver nurse-led clinics, helping families overcome difficulties with bowel problems, bladder problems, potty training and toilet anxiety.

Bladder Problems:

Daytime bladder problems are common in children, especially in younger children after the potty training stage. Issues can range from:

Sometimes needing to rush to the toilet (urgency),

• Doing lots of little wees (frequency),
• The occasional small accident or complete bladder emptying.
• Nocturnal enuresis

We can offer help and advice that explains why urinary incontinence in children can happen and how it should be treated.

Speak to our nurse specialists to find out how your child’s bladder should behave, including how often they should urinate and what is a healthy wee colour.

We also cover simple steps to reduce the risk of problems such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) and an overactive bladder.

How much will it cost?

The cost is £250 per child and includes the following:

• Initial assessment with a specialist nurse
• A link to download a diary to record activity
• A follow up assessment 2 weeks after initial assessment to to discuss and agree a support plan
• 2 further follow up appointments with a specialist nurse

At Thornbury Hospital, your child’s initial consultation will take place with a specialist paediatric consultant of your choice, at a time and date to suit you. This consultation is an opportunity to discuss all of the options available to you and your child, about your area of concern.

Your specialist paediatric consultant will discuss your child’s symptoms, along with suitable diagnostic investigations and treatment options, ensuring you and your child are fully informed about these. They will also discuss your child’s medical history, and any past procedures or investigations to create a treatment plan tailored to your child.

A specialist children’s nurse can be present at the consultation on request, for distraction or support. We have a dedicated quiet area for children with any additional needs, to make your experience as smooth as possible.

We offer a directly accessible paediatrics service for children with an array of conditions. Using the close working relationship of our specialist paediatric consultants and staff at Thornbury Hospital, children with various conditions can be expertly managed.

Please note that the initial and follow-up consultation fees are additional to any tests or procedures carried out.

Depending on the scan or test required, your child may be able to have it on the same day as their initial consultation, but we would usually arrange it for a few days after the initial consultation at a day and time to suit you.
