What is the AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill®?

The AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill® is a rehabilitation treadmill used to reduce stress on injuries and joints in the lower body. It can help patients to rehabilitate safely with less pain, and reduce the risk of re-injury. Despite it being a treadmill, you can do far more than just run and walk on the machine. For example, you can perform a range of exercises that may not be possible without the ability to reduce your body weight.

What happens during a session on the AlterG®?

The anti-gravity treadmill reduces the load on the body by regulating air in a pressure-controlled compartment.

During your session you will be asked to wear elastic shorts with a zipped waistband. You’ll step into the treadmill compartment, which also has a zip, to create a seal. The compartment fills with air, which is regulated by your physiotherapist to vary how much of your weight is offloaded. This creates a reduced-gravity environment which makes exercise easier, enabling you to walk or run on a flat, on an up and down gradient, or by walking forwards or backwards.

How much does a session on the AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill® cost?

Before booking a session on the AlterG® treadmill, you will need a full physiotherapy assessment, which is priced from £54*.

A session on the AlterG® costs from £42*.

Some hospitals offer packages for patients to benefit from regular access to the AlterG®. Please discuss this with your preferred location.

How long does a session on the AlterG® last?

The length of the session will depend on a number of factors, such as your condition, level of pain or any medical conditions that may restrict exercise. Your physiotherapist will devise a plan tailored to your needs and discuss this with you.

Can I use the machine if I’m pregnant?

We do not recommend that you use the treadmill if you are pregnant.

What is the AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill® used to treat?

The AlterG® treadmill is a fantastic treatment option for a variety of patients, including:

  • Following surgery on your ankle, knee or hip
  • Older patients requiring strengthening and conditioning rehabilitation
  • Gait training for neurological patients
  • Patients unable to walk/run due to the pain of arthritis of the knee or hip
  • Patients participating in a weight-loss program, or who are considering bariatric surgery

How can I benefit from using the AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill®?

You may benefit from sessions on the AlterG® treadmill if you experience pain or stiffness in your joints on weight-bearing, need to build strength following an operation, or want to enhance your sports performance.

Cancer patients who are feeling fatigued after treatment may also find it beneficial as a way to rebuild muscle strength, thanks to the body weight reduction technology.

The AlterG® can also give a boost of confidence if you have a long-term condition that has prevented you from walking or running with ease.
