Thornbury Hospital provides private cancer care to patients based in South Yorkshire and the surrounding area, who have been affected by cancer.
The experienced private oncology nursing team takes pride in offering high quality care to our patients. Our team of specialist private oncologists can provide the appropriate support and advice. We know that being diagnosed with cancer can be a worrying time and we pride ourselves on providing a holistic and compassionate cancer care service for over two decades.
The Cancer Unit at Thornbury Hospital treats a wide range of cancers including:
Although our private oncology department is a day care unit, we do offer 24-hour support with a designated oncology nurse who is available to contact by telephone if you are unwell. We also have our own Breast Care Nurse, Karen Ibbotson, who can support you in your cancer diagnosis and throughout your treatment. Our patients are important to us, and we endeavour to build strong relationships and take the time necessary to support you through your treatment and cancer journey.
One Stop Breast Care Clinic:
Our rapid One-Stop Breast Care clinic offers a fast, efficient service, from a prompt appointment with a consultant to any diagnostic tests that may be appropriate on the same day. You find out more information here.
A GP or consultant referral is not essential for a One Stop Clinic appointment as you can refer yourself. Patients choosing to self-pay are welcome and you will be given a quote for the cost of your treatment beforehand. Insured patients are advised to contact their insurance company before arranging any appointment as this may include a mammogram, ultrasound and possible biopsy. Please check that your insurance will cover you for any of these procedures.
Private Cancer Treatments available at the Cancer Care Unit include:
Our consultant oncologists work closely with our dedicated nursing team led by Maria Mignanelli Parkin, specialist oncology nurse.

Our cancer care service is located on the top floor of the hospital, on a dedicated and comfortable ward. The unit can be easily accessed via the lift from the physiotherapy entrance on floor -2.
Each patient has access to their own room with en-suite facilities and a television to provide privacy and comfort. Family or friends are welcome to accompany you during your time in the cancer care unit as we understand the support and benefits this can provide. The unit is staffed by our cancer care nursing team Monday to Thursday, and your specialist consultant can be contacted for advice outside of normal office hours.
We know how upsetting a cancer diagnosis can be, and our aim is to support you and your family throughout this time. Our aim is to reduce as much of the stress and anxiety as possible so that you can focus on your recovery. Patients attending the Cancer Care Unit receiving treatments are nursed in one of our seven individual rooms, with a private bathroom and additional seating available for visitors and have full access to our catering services. The Cancer Care Unit offers cancer patients chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and hormone treatment. Chemotherapy treatment will be tailored to the individuals’ needs.
Private Scalp Cooling
The Cancer Care Unit can offer private scalp cooling, a method used to assist with reducing the loss of hair during some treatments with some of the chemotherapeutic drugs. Although this cannot be recommended to all patients, the dedicated nursing staff will discuss with you the option of scalp cooling. At Thornbury Hospital we use the Paxman hair loss prevention system which is the one of the latest systems available to maximise patient’s comfort. We have four machines available for those patients who have the option to use this method.
Pharmacy
The Cancer Care Unit has an on-site pharmacy which works closely with the oncology team to provide an efficient service.
