Private Aquablation treatment in Nottingham

Access expert Aquablation treatment for an enlarged prostate at The Park Hospital

If urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate are affecting your daily life, Aquablation could provide effective, long-term relief. At The Park Hospital in Nottingham, our experienced consultant urologists offer Aquablation treatment using advanced robotic technology to precisely remove excess prostate tissue while helping to protect surrounding structures.

Aquablation is a minimally invasive treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly known as an enlarged prostate. The procedure uses a robotically controlled, heat-free water jet to remove the tissue causing obstruction, which can help improve urine flow and reduce troublesome urinary symptoms.

At The Park Hospital, patients benefit from rapid access to expert assessment, diagnostic investigations, and treatment in a modern private hospital environment. We welcome patients from Nottingham, West Bridgford, Beeston, Arnold, Mapperley, Mansfield, Newark, Derby, Leicester and surrounding areas.

If you are struggling with symptoms of an enlarged prostate, our specialists can discuss whether Aquablation is the right treatment option for you.

Aquablation is a minimally invasive treatment for an enlarged prostate (BPH) that uses a high pressure jet of salt water to remove excess prostate tissue causing issues to the bladder and urethra.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate, is a common condition affecting many men and people with a prostate as they get older. As the prostate enlarges, it can press against the urethra, making it harder for urine to flow freely from the bladder.

As the prostate enlarges, it can put pressure on and narrow the urethra, making it more difficult for urine to pass freely. This can lead to symptoms such as:

  • A weak urine flow
  • Difficulty starting to urinate (pee)
  • Frequent trips to the toilet
  • A feeling of urgency to go to the toilet
  • A feeling that the bladder has not fully emptied

Aquablation uses a robotically controlled, heat-free water jet to remove excess prostate tissue that is putting pressure on the bladder and causing urinary symptoms. It combines real time ultrasound imaging with robotic technology to enable precise treatment planning and tissue removal based on your individual needs.

The cost of your Aquablation treatment will depend on various factors. We’ll work with you to develop a tailored treatment plan, and you’ll receive a full breakdown of costs before making your decision.

You can choose to fund your treatment through self-pay (paying for yourself) or use private health insurance. We work with most major providers, and our friendly advisory team can help guide you through using your cover.

Our flexible payment options help you spread the cost of your payment across a time period that suits you. We offer fixed-term monthly payment plans over one to five years with no deposit required. If you decide to pay over 10 months, you will pay interest-free. If you are paying for a longer period, you will pay 9.9% APR.

During your initial consultation, one of our expert urologist consultants will discuss with you the symptoms that have been troubling you, your medical history, your family history, and any existing investigations you may have had.

It is also likely that they may also perform a physical examination to determine if your prostate is enlarged. This may involve examining your stomach area (abdomen), penis, and back passage (rectum).

If your consultant suspects your symptoms may be caused by BPH, they may recommend further investigations, such as blood tests, a urine test, or a transrectal ultrasound, to determine what may be causing the issue.

If an enlarged prostate is determined to be the cause of concern, your consultant will discuss your treatment options, including Aquablation. They will discuss with you how the procedure works and whether it is suitable treatment option for your individual circumstances.

On the day of your procedure, your consultant and healthcare team will prepare you for treatment and answer any questions you may have. Aquablation is typically performed under either spinal anaesthetic or general anaesthetic. With a spinal anaesthetic, you will be numb from the waist down, while a general anaesthetic means you will be asleep throughout the procedure. As the effects of anaesthesia can last for several hours, you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home after your treatment.

Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, your surgeon will insert an ultrasound probe into the rectum and a thin camera called a cystoscope through the urethra to the prostate. Because the procedure is performed through the natural urinary passage, no external incisions or surgical cuts are required.

Using real-time ultrasound and cystoscopic imaging, your surgeon creates a detailed map of the prostate, allowing them to precisely identify the enlarged tissue that needs to be removed while protecting surrounding structures that are important for urinary and sexual function.

A high-pressure saline waterjet is then used to remove excess prostate tissue causing symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or an enlarged prostate. The surgeon remains in control throughout the procedure, using advanced imaging guidance to ensure accurate tissue removal. As Aquablation uses a heat-free waterjet rather than thermal energy, it may help reduce damage to surrounding tissues.

During the treatment, a suction device removes the excess prostate tissue. Once the planned tissue removal is complete, any bleeding points are treated and the cystoscope is carefully removed. A soft tube called a urinary catheter is then placed into the bladder through the urethra to help drain urine and flush away any blood while the area begins to heal.

Most Aquablation procedures take between 40 and 60 minutes, although the exact treatment time will depend on the size of the prostate and your individual circumstances.

Following your procedure, you will usually stay in hospital overnight so your healthcare team can monitor your recovery and ensure there are no complications. It is normal to experience some mild pain, discomfort, or bladder irritation after treatment, and pain relief can be provided if needed.

During your stay, a urinary catheter will remain in place to allow the bladder to drain and be gently flushed. This helps to remove any blood or debris from the urinary tract following the procedure. The catheter is typically removed once your urine has cleared and you are able to pass urine comfortably, although your consultant will advise you on what to expect based on your individual circumstances.

Before you go home, your consultant will provide personalised recovery advice and explain any temporary side effects that may occur after Aquablation treatment for an enlarged prostate. As you will not be able to drive immediately following anaesthesia, you will need a family member, friend, or professional carer to take you home. Most patients are able to return to driving within approximately 48 hours, subject to their consultant's advice and their recovery progress.

Most patients can return to normal daily activities within one to two weeks, although recovery times can vary depending on overall health, prostate size, and individual healing.

You may be offered follow-up appointments after your Aquablation procedure so your consultant can monitor your recovery, assess improvements in your urinary symptoms, and ensure you are achieving the best possible outcome from treatment. Regular follow-up also provides an opportunity to discuss any ongoing side effects or concerns as you recover from surgery.

Aquablation can provide long-lasting relief from urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate. Using robotic-assisted technology and real-time imaging guidance, Aquablation is designed to effectively remove excess prostate tissue while helping to preserve important structures involved in sexual function and urinary control.

Benefits of the procedure can include:

  • Most people find they can pass urine more easily and with a better flow
  • You’re likely to need to get up less often at night and feel less urgency during the day
  • The procedure is done through the urethra, so there are no external scars or stitches
  • Quick and precise treatment
  • Works for many prostate sizes
  • Higher chance of protecting sexual function better, compared with some other prostate procedures
  • Low chance of needing further treatment
  • Swifter recovery

Many patients experience an improvement in urinary symptoms following treatment, which may help them return to daily activities with greater comfort and confidence.

As with any treatment, outcomes vary between individuals. Your experience will depend on a range of factors, including your prostate size, anatomy, and overall health.

Your consultant will discuss the expected benefits and any potential limitations based on your specific circumstances.
