Orthopaedic Surgery The Beaumont Hospital
At The Beaumont Hospital in Bolton, Greater Manchester, we have highly qualified consultants who can help you decide if orthopaedic surgery is right for you.
Orthopaedic surgery, sometimes simply called joint surgery, covers both emergency care and elective surgery. Emergency orthopaedic surgery usually treats:
In elective surgery, “people have a chronic problem, and they come to have a discussion about whether there is any surgery that could benefit them and improve their quality of life,” explains Dr James Childs, consultant orthopaedic surgeon and knee specialist at the Beaumont.
Examples of elective orthopaedic surgery include knee ligament repairs or knee replacements to treat arthritis.
The Beaumont Hospital is located in Bolton in Greater Manchester. People visit us from across Lancashire and the North West, from local areas including Wigan, Bury, Chorley, Leigh, Worsley and Burnley. We also welcome patients from across the UK, as well as abroad. When you go private, you can choose which hospital and which consultant are the best fit for you.
The Beaumont Hospital offers a wide variety of orthopaedic procedures; these are listed below.
Rotator cuff surgery, or rotator cuff repair, and shoulder replacement are two of the most common forms of shoulder surgery offered at The Beaumont.
Rotator cuff surgery preserves and repairs the injured muscles and tendons that surround your shoulder. You may need this procedure if you've had an injury or if your rotator cuff is damaged from age-related degeneration.
The Beaumont also offers shoulder replacement surgery, which replaces your shoulder joint with a prosthesis. This may be a useful option if your joint has been damaged by arthritis or a severe fracture, for example. The hospital offers total shoulder replacement and reverse total shoulder replacement - where the positions of the ball and socket in the shoulder joint are reversed.
The vast majority of hip surgeries at The Beaumont are total hip replacements.
Hip replacements are some of the most successful surgeries in medicine. They are used to treat severe arthritis or damage to your hip caused by lack of blood supply or other conditions from birth.
Consultants at The Beaumont Hospital offer several spinal surgeries for people with chronic back pain that is not alleviated by other measures. These include spinal fusion surgery, lumbar decompression surgery, and lumbar laminectomy.
Partial or total knee replacements are available. The procedures can resurface your knee joint if it has been damaged by various forms of arthritis, improving the mobility and function of your knee and reducing pain.
Knee arthroscopy, or keyhole surgery, is a minimally invasive procedure used for diagnosing and treating problems with your knee. These include ligament tears and meniscus injuries, or damaged cartilage.
Knee arthroscopy can be used in ligament reconstruction, such as ACL and PCL reconstruction, or cartilage regeneration.
Also called knee osteotomy, this procedure is an excellent alternative to knee replacements, especially in the younger population. It involves cutting the tibial bone to realign the leg so that the pressure is taken off the affected knee area, reducing the pain.
Other orthopaedic procedures offered at The Beaumont Hospital include:
In these cases, "it would be worthwhile to consult a surgeon in order to, firstly, confirm the diagnosis and secondly, to discuss all the available treatment options - both non-operative and operative," adds Dr Childs.
In your initial consultation, your surgeon will ask you a series of questions to learn more about your medical history. Any necessary investigations will be performed on that day or shortly afterwards. Then, on your second consultation, you will discuss your treatment options, which will be tailor-made for you.
"Depending on what you wanted out of the treatment, whether that's a slight improvement, pain relief, or getting back to sports - the options will be discussed with you, and a management plan will be provided."
The follow-up appointments will all be led by the same consultant, Dr Childs explains.
"Pretty much all the orthopaedic surgeons work at The Beaumont on a regular basis, so access to them at short notice is fairly easy. You get cared for from day one until the day of discharge."
Specialists at The Beaumont perform as many cases as possible on an outpatient basis, so you don't have to stay in the hospital overnight for most orthopaedic surgeries.
"Even for a significant number of knee replacements or hip replacements, you will be discharged from hospital within 24 hours - of course only if you're safe and comfortable to do so," says Dr Childs.
The consultant adds that there is no pressure on you whatsoever to leave the hospital early, but most people find that they are more comfortable in their own home after a procedure. This is due to how good the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Program is at Beaumont. ERAS is a new surgery protocol that speeds up a person's recovery after surgery.
"Regarding knee replacements, 8 out of 10 people say they are happy or very with the results Twelve months from the date of the operation; with hip replacements, that would be 9 out of 10 people."
As for risks, they "are low, but not insignificant," says the consultant. The overall risks of complications from orthopaedic surgery include:
"It is important to discuss the risk of complications with each person", Dr Childs emphasises, as some people may have a higher or lower risk, depending on various factors, such as:
"From a patient's perspective, it's important to have an in-depth consultation with the consultant [...] about how these risks relate to you, and [about] how that complication would affect you and your life."
Enhanced recovery at The Beaumont consists of prompt, personalised physiotherapy and a combination of pain relief medication. This will reduce your hospital stay and speed up your recovery.
"On the day of surgery you will be seen by a physiotherapist and you will receive a broad spectrum of painkillers - both local ones, applied to where your operation has taken place but also more general ones," explains Dr Childs.
The physiotherapy regime that you'll receive after the surgery is specific to your needs and the operation that you've had. "Everyone needs a different amount of physiotherapy and some people will need one or two sessions, while others need more." How much physiotherapy you'll need depends on your condition before surgery.
"We have a broad spectrum of specialities," says Dr Childs. "There are clinics open throughout the day, and there are even regular evening clinics that run up to eight o'clock at night so you can come after work. There are some early morning clinics as well."
The Beaumont boasts newly refurbished facilities, modern diagnostic facilities, comfortable ensuite hospital rooms, and a team of well-established orthopaedic experts dedicated to your speedy recovery.
The hospital also offers a comprehensive aftercare package following your surgery and flexible payment options that make private orthopaedic surgery more affordable than you might think.
Our experts believe in personalised care delivered in a warm and friendly atmosphere. "The hospital is very welcoming," says Dr Childs.
