Robotic knee surgery: Derek’s story

Derek is fitter than ever after life-changing robotic surgery at Mount Alvernia Hospital

Robotic knee surgery: Derek’s story

Derek Pye underwent robotic knee surgery at Mount Alvernia Hospital in Guildford after suffering 60 years of knee pain caused by playing rugby. His surgeon, Mr Oliver Templeton-Ward, used robotic technology to replace Mr Pye's knee in one of the first procedures carried out using a robot.

Derek’s symptoms and journey to diagnosis

81-year-old Derek had enjoyed weekends rushing up and down rugby pitches during his youth, but his knee had always given him pain. In 2022, it became particularly excruciating whilst he was out walking his dog in the beautiful Surrey countryside near his home just outside of Guildford. He knew he had to do something about it.

Having seen Mr Templeton-Ward on the NHS for initial tests and deciding a knee replacement was required, Mr Pye elected to self-fund his operation at Mount Alvernia as he was aware of the pressure the NHS is under. "I was familiar with Mount Alvernia Hospital already, having been a patient there a few years previously and so was happy to come back to a familiar environment."

Mr Templeton-Ward was very positive, knowledgeable and had a good sense of humour, which all made me feel very comfortable.

Derek’s treatment with Mr Templeton-Ward

Derek felt an instant rapport with his consultant and was confident for a successful outcome for his knee surgery.

"Mr Templeton-Ward was very positive, knowledgeable and had a good sense of humour, which all made me feel very comfortable. He talked through the surgery with me in advance, answering all my questions confidently. As I was a returning patient, I felt reassured to be coming to a hospital that I was familiar with too." - Derek

An established practice, robotic arm assisted surgery is performed by surgeons. In the case of Derek's knee replacement operation, the technology allows for pinpoint accuracy and more precision than conventional methods.

Mr Templeton-Ward used Mako® software to pre-plan the surgery and then perform it with the assistance of the robotic arm, which he guides to remove the diseased bone and cartilage. The knee implant is then inserted into the optimum position for the individual patient.

Everything you need to know about robotic-assisted surgery

The benefits of robotic-assisted knee surgery

There are various benefits to robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery. These can include:

Less time in the hospital

You could be back in your own home faster.

Reduced damage to healthy tissue and ligaments

The equipment creates a virtual boundary for your surgeon to use during the procedure.

By following this, they can be more precise in their removal of bone and cartilage, avoiding damage to the healthy parts of your knee.

A better-feeling, better-functioning knee

Studies show that robotic-arm assisted joint replacement surgery leads to better functional outcomes.

People who have had robotic-arm assisted knee replacements have found their new joints more natural-feeling and have been more satisfied overall.

As I was a returning patient, I felt reassured to be coming to a hospital that I was familiar with.

Recovering at home

Derek was amazed to discover that his knee pain had gone so quickly after the surgery and is anticipating a more active future, especially with his pet. "I know the dog has missed me and I'm looking forward to getting out and about with him again, although I suspect that whilst I'm getting used to my new knee, he'll be walking me!"
