He later completed a two-year fellowship in head and neck cancer surgery at Albany Medical College in New York. This included training in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as time at the University of Pittsburgh focusing on complex skull base surgery.

After a year in private practice in Albany, New York, he returned to the UK and was appointed as a Consultant at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen.
Mr Hussain has published a paper in the Journal of Laryngology & Otology on a new surgical technique called selective lateral laser thyroarytenoid myotomy. This is conceptually sound, simple, minimally invasive, repeatable and predictable new surgical procedure for treating adductor spasmodic dysphonia. This paper aims to introduce and describe the surgical technique, and to present a clinical case series and its outcomes.
