About Mr Akhtar Hussain

Personal Profile

Mr Hussain qualified as a doctor in 1978. After earning his Officership, he served as a Captain in the Army Medical Corps. Once his military service ended, he spent a year working in Accident & Emergency medicine before beginning his specialist training in Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgery in London and Manchester.

He later completed a two-year fellowship in head and neck cancer surgery at Albany Medical College in New York. This included training in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as time at the University of Pittsburgh focusing on complex skull base surgery.

Mr Hussain has also completed several mini fellowships, including:

• A general plastic surgery fellowship at Canniesburn Regional Plastic Surgery Centre in Glasgow
• A cosmetic surgery fellowship at Hedgewood Surgical Centre in New Orleans
• Another cosmetic surgery fellowship at The Williams Centre for Excellence in New York

After a year in private practice in Albany, New York, he returned to the UK and was appointed as a Consultant at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen.

Mr Hussain has published a paper in the Journal of Laryngology & Otology on a new surgical technique called selective lateral laser thyroarytenoid myotomy. This is  conceptually sound, simple, minimally invasive, repeatable and predictable new surgical procedure for treating adductor spasmodic dysphonia. This paper aims to introduce and describe the surgical technique, and to present a clinical case series and its outcomes.

  • Voice disorders
  • Complex skull based surgery in collaboration with neurosurgeons. This also involves management of meningiomas and various other neurological tumours.
