Huddersfield Private Hospital in West Yorkshire offers a directly accessible Hand and Wrist service for patients. This service is complemented by a diagnostic investigations.
If you are experiencing any of the following common conditions, consider booking a private appointment with a hand and wrist consultant:
• Carpal tunnel syndrome - This is a common condition which results from compression of a nerve in your wrist. The compression causes pins and needles, weakness, clumsiness, and pain. Commonly, symptoms are worse at night.
• Arthritis - There are many types of arthritis, and all of them can affect the hand and wrist, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. Symptoms can include pain, swelling, stiffness, decreased strength and function, deformities and instability.
• Acute sports injury - Contact sports are a leading cause of injuries to the hands, fingers, and wrists. These injuries often include dislocations, sprains and fractures. Injuries can occur from falls that force the hand or fingers backwards, direct blows to the body or forceful impacts to the hands.
Your specialist will be able to determine the appropriate scans and tests for a fast and accurate diagnosis. We frequently conduct further examinations on patients experiencing the above, using MRI, CT Scan, X-ray and Ultrasound, all available at Huddersfield Private Hospital.
Many surgical procedures relating to the hand and wrist can be performed under local anaesthetic as day-case procedures, meaning they can go home the same day.
The dedicated physiotherapy department at Huddersfield Private Hospital works closely with the hand and wrist surgeons to provide immediate post-surgery care and ongoing rehabilitation. We have a dedicated hand therapist, specially trained in therapy for hand and wrist conditions and post-surgery rehabilitation.
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is caused by pressure on your median nerve (a large nerve that passes through the front on your wrist). This can lead to pain and numbness in your hand and fingers. Carpal tunnel release surgery can remove pressure on this nerve and relieve any pain or numbness.
Hand surgery for Dupuytren’s disease
Dupuytren’s disease is a condition that causes one or more of your fingers to bend in towards your wrist. Hand surgery for Dupuytren’s disease can help straighten the affected fingers. It could involve a needle fasciotomy, where a needle is placed across multiple areas in your palm and affected finger to loosen and straighten your finger; or a fasciectomy, where a surgical cut is made across your affected finger and palm to straighten your finger.
Hand ligament reconstruction surgery
Your ligaments are connective bands of tissue that attach the bones in your hand to one another. Sometimes an injury can damage or tear these ligaments. In this instance, surgery can be performed to repair the damage.
A wrist arthroscopy is a keyhole operation where small incisions are made around your wrist joint to allow an arthroscope (a thin tube with a camera) is be passed into the joint. This allows your Orthopaedic Surgeon to view the inside of your wrist on a display monitor. Surgical instruments are then passed in through these same tiny incisions to treat problems inside your wrist.
A wrist arthroscopy can be used to perform treatments including torn ligaments repair, removing a ganglion cyst (a fluid-filled bump near your wrist joint or tendon), and extracting bone fragments from a wrist fracture.
In cases where your trigger finger is only moderate, non-surgical treatments can usually resolve the problem. This may include resting your finger, anti-inflammatory medications, wearing a splint, steroid injections, or various stretching exercises. If these treatments don't make a difference and your finger stays in a locked position, your consultant may recommend trigger finger release surgery, which is performed under local anaesthesia and involves releasing the structure that is blocking your tendon's movement.
When you arrive for your appointment, your consultant will assess your condition by carrying out a physical examination of your hand and wrist, asking you to carry out simple movements to test your function and any pain you are feeling. They will also ask about your medical history to fully understand your condition, your concerns, and to determine the appropriate next steps.
Once they have made their assessment, they will usually refer you for a scan or test. Thanks to the comprehensive range of diagnostics facilities available at Huddersfield Private Hospital, we can quickly conduct further testing with ease.
Usually, you will be able to have an X-ray at the same appointment. More complex tests such as an MRI scan will likely be booked for a later date suitable to you, within a couple of weeks.
When your consultant receives the results from your tests, they will discuss the best course of treatment for you. It could be that you just need physiotherapy or a steroid injection, but if surgery is required, a suitable time and date will be arranged with your consultant.
