A detailed prostatic assessment service is available at St Edmunds Hospital, for men aged 50 and over.

There is increasing awareness of prostate related problems in men over the age of 50 years and particular concern in the rise of prostatic cancers.

Symptoms of prostate disease include:

Needing to urinate more often, especially at night
Needing to rush to the toilet, you may even leak urine sometimes
Difficulty starting to pass urine
Straining or taking a long time to finish
A weak flow
A feeling that your bladder has not emptied properly
Dribbling
Pain when passing urine

These symptoms can be caused by other non cancerous problems so it is important to find out what is wrong. If you are suffering from any of the above symptoms, or have a family history of prostate cancer, it is advisable to have your prostate gland assessed. A simple examination and blood test will help to diagnose the cause.

A prostatic assessment at St Edmunds Hospital includes:

Blood pressure
PSA blood test
Urinalysis
PCA3 gene-based urine test
DRE (Digital Rectal Examination) and examination of genitalia
Brief medical history concentrating on urological symptoms
Report to patient and GP

In addition, we provide counselling and advice of possible further tests, where appropriate.

Prostate mapping

Following a prostatic assessment, we may recommend that you consider prostate mapping. This is a process by which men suspected of having prostate cancer or men with a diagnosis of prostate cancer, can be more certain of their true risk. If we do recommend this, we will discuss the full details of this option with you.
