About Syed Ahsan

Personal Profile

Dr Syed Ahsan is a Consultant Cardiologist and Heart Rhythm Specialist at Barts Heart Centre. He was previously a Consultant Cardiologist at the Heart Hospital, part of the world leading University College London and joined St Bartholomew's following the merger of the two cardiac centres. He is also an honorary consultant at North Middlesex University Hospital where his practice encompasses all aspects of adult cardiology and where he has established an arrhythmia service for the local population. 

Dr Ahsan graduated from Guys Kings and St Thomas' Medical School in 2000 with a First Class Honours degree in his BSc. He undertook his cardiology specialist training at various prestigious hospitals in London where he has worked with world renowned experts. These include the Royal Brompton Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Heart Hospital where he undertook his fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology and Cardiac Devices.

His postgraduate medical doctorate was awarded from University College London and evaluated strategies to optimise outcomes in patients with cardiac rhythm devices. Syed's pioneering research work was awarded the Royal Society of Medicine National Prize in 2009 and was presented nationally and internationally in Europe and the USA. He has been a finalist in two national young investigator awards.

In his current role, Dr Ahsan sees and treats patients with a range of cardiac symptoms and conditions. Dr Ahsan performs ablation procedures for the treatment of heart rhythm disturbances using the latest technology and has considerable experience in this area. He is currently one of the leads for atrial fibrillation at Barts Heart Centre.

He also implants all types of cardiac devices including pacemakers, resynchronisation and defibrillator devices. Dr Ahsan specialises in ablation treatments for arrhythmia and cardiac pacing. He also treats patients with blackouts, chest pain and dizziness. Dr Ahsan makes a clear and comprehensive assessment of all patients who he sees. He takes the time to explain any tests and treatment required as well as considering all alternative options.
