About Mr Stephen Wood

Personal Profile

Mr Stephen Wood is a Senior Ear, Nose and Throat Consultant with almost 30 years of experience in his specialty.  He undertook his medical training at the University of Bristol, qualifying in 1987.  He initially undertook a broad training in general surgery and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1992.  He then specialised in ENT Surgery and trained at the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital in London and at hospitals in the South West of England.  He became a Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Bristol and was awarded a prestigious national research prize for his study into the genetics of sinus disease.  He was invited to present this work to international conferences in Europe and America.  In 1999 Mr Wood was awarded the highly prestigious Clinical Surgery Fellowship at the University of Toronto, Canada where he learned advanced surgical techniques in the field of ENT and Head & Neck Surgery.  He was also a Visiting Fellow in at the Memorial Sloane Kettering Hospital in New York and at the MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas, USA.

In 2000 Mr Wood became a Consultant Senior Lecturer in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Bristol where he was responsible for the teaching of medical students and for the ENT Research programme at the University.  In 2002 he joined the ENT department at Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals (Frimley Health NHS Trust) where he continues to work.  

In his NHS practice Mr Wood undertakes general ENT clinics, a Neck Lump clinic and Thyroid and Head and Neck Oncology clinics.  He has previously undertaken specialist Paediatric and Voice clinics within his hospital.  He is a core member of the Thyroid and Head and Neck Cancer teams and has previously been the Lead for Head & Neck Surgery and the Chair of the Thyroid MDT for his hospital trust.  He was previously an Honorary Consultant at Northwick Park Hospital.  He was previously the Lead for Clinical Governance and Quality Assurance for ENT at Wexham Park Hospital.

Mr Wood can see and consult on children of all ages. Whilst most young children can be managed without surgery, when it is required, he undertakes this at The Princess Margaret Hospital for children aged 3 and above. 

Mr Wood remains actively involved in teaching and training and previously he was the Tutor for ENT in his department.  He is the founder and previously a faculty member of the Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Course for trainee surgeons in Bristol.  He has also previously been a faculty member of the ENT Laser Surgery course and the Reading Part 3 FRCS course.  He regularly lectures to GPs and other allied healthcare professionals on all aspects of ENT practice.
