Mr Shaun Preston, Consultant General Surgeon

Personal Profile

Shaun Preston has developed a regional oesophago-gastric unit for Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire at the Royal Surrey County Hospital.

His passion for laparoscopic surgery resulted in him being appointed as Lead Consultant for Oesophageal and Gastric Surgery as well as Director of Upper GI Courses at the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit (MATTU) at the University of Surrey.

Training and Appointment

He trained in Leeds where, as well as degrees in medicine and surgery (MB ChB (1990)), he obtained undergraduate degree in biochemistry. He undertook research in stomach and bowel cancer leading to the awarding of his doctorate (MD) in 1997.

The same year he was appointed Lecturer in Surgery on the University Department of Surgery in Leeds (1997-2000) where he gained extensive experience in laparoscopic surgery, advanced endoscopic techniques, hernia surgery and complex gastrointestinal surgery.

In 2000, he was awarded the Association of Surgeons Gold Medal and Prize as the top candidate in the UK in the Intercollegiate examination in surgery (FRCS(Gen)). He spent 18 months as the senior trainee on the Northern Oesophago-Gastric Unit working with Professor SM Griffin.

After completing his training in Newcastle, he was awarded the prestigious British Council / Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research fellowship at the world-famous National Cancer Center Hospital in Tokyo, where he worked with Drs Maruyama, Sasako and Sano.

He also spent time with Professor JD Luketich at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), learning the technique of Minimally Invasive Oesophagectomy (MIO) and now uses minimally invasive techniques for both stomach and gullet cancer in selected cases here in the UK.
