About Phillip Edge

Personal Profile

Mr Edge graduated from the University of Cape Town Medical School in 1984 and completed his orthopaedic training at the world renowned Groote Schuur Hospital in 1996.

Whilst working in Africa he gained a huge experience in the modern treatment of difficult orthopaedic conditions seen mainly in the third world, as well as routine orthopaedic treatments.

At the end of 1996 he moved to the United Kingdom and worked as a consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Luton and Dunstable NHS Trust and privately at BUPA Harpenden. In the year 2000 he took up the post of Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Bedford Hospital NHS Trust, and began work at The Manor Hospital in Bedford.

Mr Edge has close academic links with Cambridge and is closely involved in the teaching and training of Orthopaedic Registrars. He is also a member of a London Orthopaedic Group and meets regularly with Orthopaedic Consultants from the top London Teaching hospitals to discuss interesting cases.

From 2003 - 2007 he was Chairman of the Manor Hospital Medical Advisory Committee. He retired from the NHS in 2021 but continues to practice with a busy clinic at The Manor hospital.

Clinical Interests

Mr Edge has a wealth of experience in many aspects of orthopaedic surgery, including both upper limb and lower limb problems. He regularly performs: hip and knee replacements, knee arthroscopies, forefoot surgery including bunions, hand surgery and soft tissue elbow surgery. He also regularly performs non-bony surgery such as nerve releases (for instance carpal tunnel), tendon surgery, and removal of lumps and bumps.

He is happy to consult and give advice on all aspects of orthopaedics. Mr Edge's special clinical interests include:

  • Hip replacements (cemented, uncemented and hybrid)
  • Knee replacements
  • Arthroscopic knee surgery (arthritis, cartilage tears, etc)
  • Hand surgery
  • Elbow and shoulder surgery
  • Forefoot, bunion and toe surgery
  • Surgical management of rheumatoid arthritis
  • Children’s orthopaedic problems.

Mr Edge was a full time NHS consultant from 1996 - 2021, he has been based in Bedford since the year 2000. He has held honorary contracts at Cambridge, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Northampton and Luton.
