Following his graduation, Mr Riaz undertook higher specialist training in orthopaedic and trauma surgery in Yorkshire. He subsequently completed a sub-speciality fellowship in knee and sports surgery at Chapel Allerton Hospital in Leeds. This fellowship included experience at the Major Trauma Centre at Leeds General Infirmary, focusing on complex sports knee injuries, multi-ligament reconstruction, advanced cartilage regeneration techniques, and computer-navigated and robotic knee replacement surgery. Additionally, he holds a Diploma in Football Medicine from FIFA, enhancing his expertise in managing sports injuries.
Mr Riaz's clinical interests are concentrated on knee surgery, particularly sports-related knee injuries. He has extensive experience in treating elite athletes and specialises in procedures such as ACL reconstruction, arthroscopy (keyhole) surgery, meniscal repair, and cartilage regeneration surgeries, including Autologous Matrix-Induced Chondrogenesis (AMIC) and the AutoCart procedure. He also performs PCL, MCL, and LCL ligament repair and reconstruction, as well as patella stabilisation surgery. Employing the latest surgical techniques, Mr Riaz aims to minimise the risk of ACL graft re-rupture, utilising methods such as Lateral Extra-Articular Tenodesis (LET) and Anterolateral Ligament Reconstruction (ALL) for high-level athletes, young patients, those with hypermobility, and in revision ACL reconstruction cases.
In addition to sports injuries, Mr Riaz treats patients with arthritis, focusing on knee joint preservation whenever possible. His treatments range from physiotherapy and knee joint injections (steroid, hyaluronic acid, PRP, biologics) to joint re-alignment surgery like high tibial osteotomy and total knee joint replacement.
Mr Riaz has treated numerous professional football and rugby players, gaining considerable expertise in managing injuries of professional athletes. He applies this knowledge to all his patients, aiming to help individuals of all ages and athletic levels overcome knee challenges and pursue their passions. His research interests include enabling patients to return to sports or achieve high-level function post-knee surgery.
Mr Riaz established and currently leads the soft tissue and sports knee service at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust. He chairs a weekly multidisciplinary meeting with advanced physiotherapy practitioners and fellow knee surgeons. He is also committed to training future surgeons and serves as the lead for junior doctors in the orthopaedic and trauma surgery department.
A dedicated researcher, Mr Riaz has over 20 peer-reviewed publications and more than 30 international presentations. He oversees multiple clinical research projects, including studies comparing quadriceps tendon grafts to hamstring grafts for ACL reconstruction. This research allows him to offer personalised surgical options for sports injuries, such as double suspensory ACL reconstruction techniques and quadriceps tendon grafts for elite athletes. He leverages technological advancements, often using 3D-printed technology to enhance accuracy in osteotomy surgery.
Mr Riaz is the principal investigator for the national REPPORT trial, which explores surgical versus personalised knee therapy for knee instability. He is passionate about evidence-based medicine and strives to drive innovative care in all patient interactions.
In his spare time, Mr Riaz is an avid footballer, playing twice a week, and he follows the sport closely. He also enjoys holidays and exploring new places with his two daughters and his wife, who is a local GP
