Mr Mohammed Abdus-Samee is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a subspecialist interest in Shoulder and Upper Limb surgery.

He was born and raised in London and went to school in Dulwich. His medical degree and intercalated BSc Hons were completed at Imperial College, London. After his basic surgical training he spent a year at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore working with prominent surgeons.

He completed his higher surgical training on the South-East Thames Rotation and after passing the intercollegiate examinations he went on to complete fellowship training in Sports & Arthroscopic Surgery in Stoke on Trent with further fellowship training in shoulder and elbow surgery in Bristol.

Mr Abdus-Samee further developed expertise in upper limb surgery by attending a wide range of courses and further training within Europe and North America meeting with and learning from leaders in the field.

His current NHS commitment is at Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust, London (since 2012) as a Shoulder & Upper Limb Consultant with some sports/soft tissue knee surgery. This involves both elective and emergency surgery and he takes a significant number of referrals for Sports Injuries as well as complex and revision surgery both from local GPs in the South-East and colleagues.

He has been nominated for Staff Awards for Safety as well as patient appreciation. He was asked to become the Governance Lead in December 2014.
He is a keen teacher and currently supervises both senior and junior surgical trainees. He examines medical students at King's College and also helps out by examining FRCS(Orth) candidates at local courses as well as being an active qualified ATLS instructor.

Clinical Interests

  • He specialises in open and keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery of the shoulder with a particular interest in reconstruction (rotator cuff repairs, SLAP repairs and gleno-humeral and acromioclavicular stabilisations).
  • He also offers the whole spectrum of shoulder decompressions/debridements (subacromial decompressions) and surgery to the ACJ (acromioclavicular joint).
  • He has a high success rate in returning athletes and sportsmen and women to their original level of function. Shoulder stabilisations are done both arthroscopically and open when necessary including Latarjet procedures when indicated.
  • Apart from being an expert arthroscopist, he achieves excellent results with shoulder replacements with patients achieving near full elevation with anatomic and also reverse total shoulder replacements.
  • His other interests include general upper limb surgery of the elbow, wrist and hand and also general trauma surgery.
