After basic degrees in clinical pharmacology and medicine at the University of Dundee, Dr Al-Aloul completed specialist training in the Mersey Deanery and was appointed consultant respiratory physician at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) in 2005 where he was the lead lung transplant physician until 2024 following which his NHS practice moved to Stockport NHS Foundation Trust.
Dr Al-Aloul maintained a busy work load in all aspects of general respiratory medicine for over 20 years, including a weekly GP open access clinic. He is a highly skilled bronchoscopist who has performed over 8000 procedures including transbronchial biopsy, airway dilatation and stenting and endobronchial valve insertion for lung volume reduction in emphysema. He is a accredited in thoracic ultrasound and is a recognised FUSIC ultrasound trainer and examiner. Having led the pleural service at Wythenshawe Hospital between 2011 and 2015, he is skilled in all pleural procedures. He was a core member of the lung cancer and mesothelioma MDTs. Dr Al-Aloul also served as a Medical Examiner at MFT between 2020-22 leading morbidity and mortality reviews.
Dr Al-Aloul founded the Association of Lung Transplant Physicians UK in 2006 and chaired it until 2014, providing an advisory role to NHS England and NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) to standardise lung transplant candidate eligibility criteria and the national referral pathways. He represented Manchester on the Cardiothoracic Advisory Group of NHSBT and led the national Lung Allocation
Working Group 2012-2017, creating a new candidate prioritisation scheme centred on patient clinical need and removing historical geographic boundaries. As a key opinion leader in this field, he has presented his work at several national fora and to various patient advocacy groups.
Research/teaching
MD 2010, University of Liverpool: a post graduate doctorate thesis researching treatments of pseudomonas lung infection and innovative methods of minimising their renal toxicity. Dr Al-Aloul has acted as a principal investigator on number of national and international clinical trials, supervised postgraduate degrees and has several peer reviewed publications. He is an established educator, leading the University of Manchester heart-lung-blood undergraduate module for 3 years before holding the post of Associate Hospital Dean for undergraduate studies in 2018 for 3 years.
