Miss Jana Shequem

Miss Sheqem specialises in the assessment and management of vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina and general Ophthalmology.

At Goring Hall Hospital Miss Shequem offers Cataract Surgery, Wet Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and injections for AMD.

She trained in Ophthalmology at the University Eye Clinic of Bonn in Germany during which time Miss Sheqem worked extensively with Ocular Ultrasound and wrote her dissertation on this subject. She did her Fellowships in the UK at Southampton University eye clinic and completed this in 2001.

Miss Sheqem then moved to the UK and worked in several hospitals in the south-east of the country, sub-specialising in vitreoretinal surgery at the Southampton University Eye Clinic. From Southampton, Miss Sheqem moved to Italy where she was a Consultant in Vitreoretinal Surgery and Medical Retina at various hospitals.

Miss Sheqem has extensive experience in the treatment of retinal diseases, both surgical and medical together with a deep interest in the management of diabetic eye disease and in promoting retinal screening in those with diabetes.

Miss Sheqem has worked in University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust for 5 years between 2015-2020 where she was the lead for AMD. During this time, she also trained nurses in injection techniques for AMD. Miss Shequem also works with the team at the Trust to rewrite the guidelines for AMD.

During her time as AMD Lead she also provided talks to the macular society and the Local Optical Council.

Her experience has been main private as she has worked at Moorfield eye hospital in Dubai from 2011-2015 as a medical retina specialist surgeon. Miss Sheqem actively took part in conferencing and advising companies that produced medication in Dubai for macular degeneration on how to best provide the service.

Miss Sheqem is fluent in many language including English, German, Italian, Arabic and French.
