About Mr James Platt

Personal Profile

Mr Platt is a Consultant lower limb surgeon specialising in knee and hip surgery.

He commenced his medical studies in 1994 at St Mary’s Hospital, London and qualified in 2001 with a Distinction in Surgery, awarded to the highest performing candidates. He was awarded a Medical School prize for his overall performance in final medical exams. 

Whilst completing his medical studies, he took two years out from his medical degree to complete an additional two degrees. Firstly, he was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree (BSc) in Neuroscience from Imperial College, London and later he was awarded a scholarship to Oxford University, studying at University College, Oxford to complete a Master of Science (MSc) in Diagnostic Imaging (Radiology). The research he completed as part of his MSc at Oxford University on novel salivary gland imaging techniques was presented at national and international meetings.

Mr Platt completed his first year after qualification at Wexham Park Hospital, in Slough and at St Mary’s Hospital in London. He completed his basic surgical training at University College Hospital, London and he completed his higher Orthopaedic surgical training on the prestigious North West Thames training programme, working in Central London specialist centres including Charing Cross Hospital and Chelsea & Westminster Hospital as well as several busy District General Hospitals. 

Upon completion of his Orthopaedic training, he undertook subspecialist training on a fellowship in soft tissue knee surgery and knee arthroplasty (replacement) at Tunbridge Wells Hospital, Kent.

Upon completing his knee fellowship, Mr Platt returned to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital to work as a Consultant hip and knee surgeon. After two years at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital he moved to Hillingdon and Mount Vernon Hospital where he worked as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon between 2017 and 2024. Since August 2024 he has worked wholly in private practice.

He has published several articles on a variety of orthopaedic topics covering the hip, knee and ankle, has published on novel surgical techniques and has written a book to help Orthopaedic trainees prepare for the Orthopaedic Fellowship (FRCS) exam. 

 

Mr Platt is a committed teacher. He is a faculty member on the renowned Miller FRCS exam revision course and the Chelsea Basic Arthroscopy Course. He lectures on the Imperial Orthopaedic MSc course. Mr Platt was course convenor for prospective Orthopaedic trainees covering the practical skills required to secure a position on an Orthopaedic training programme. He lectures to industry bodies, Allied Health professionals, and provides careers guidance for prospective medical school applicants and work experience placements.

In his free time, Mr Platt enjoys woodwork/DIY, working on cars/mechanics, cycling, skiing, travel and spending time with his family. He builds and maintains his own bicycles, and is an ex 2nd category road racer. He has played Rugby for Harlequins, English universities, England Students U21, Oxford University and St Mary’s Hospital/Imperial Medicals. He is a double gold-medallist at the World Medical Games for Rugby sevens. He is an accomplished track and field athlete, competing at the English Schools national championships, for Octathlon, Decathlon and Javelin over multiple years.

Clinical Interests

Mr Platt’s practice encompasses treatment of arthritis of the knee and hip, sports injuries and young adult arthritic conditions of the knee.

He has a particular interest in joint preserving procedures and offers the new Arthrosamid implant for knee arthritis. He is an advocate for partial knee replacement surgery, also known as half knee replacement, unicondylar knee replacement, or limited knee replacement and is particularly interested in treating younger patients with arthritic problems. Partial knee replacements comprise a large proportion of his surgical procedures, either with the Oxford knee replacement or Mako robotic system.

Mr Platt is Mako robotic surgery certified, and he has been involved in robotic surgery since its infancy during his time working at Charing Cross Hospital. In the intervening time he has had experience of various systems: Acrobot, Stanmore instruments, and Stryker Mako. He currently offers Mako robotic partial knee replacement, Mako total knee replacement and total Mako hip replacement. He also offers non-robotic surgery with standard instruments.

Mr Platt has a particular interest and expertise in treating anterior knee pain also known as kneecap pain or patellofemoral pain and kneecap instability. He can offer non-surgical treatments in conjunction with radiologist and physiotherapist colleagues and patellar realignment surgical procedures where necessary. He is a member of the British Patellofemoral Society.

Mr Platt is fellowship-trained in soft tissue knee surgery and can offer both non-surgical and surgical treatment for common sports injuries, skiing injuries, running injuries, meniscal tears, ligament reconstruction, and cartilage injuries.
