Personal Profile

Mr Hussein El-Shafei graduated from the School of Medicine at Ain Shams University in Egypt in 1979. He obtained various degrees including MB.ChB, Master in Surgery, MD, FRCS,Ed, FRCS,Gla, EBTCS, and FRCS/CTh.

Mr El-Shafei trained in medicine and surgery and specialised in cardiothoracic surgery. He is registered on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council in Cardiothoracic surgery. He has worked in Cairo, Glasgow, Blackpool, London, Liverpool and Saudi Arabia. He has been in his current post as Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and the University Hospital of Aberdeen, Scotland, since 1999.

Mr El-Shafei's sub-speciality interests are less invasive cardiac surgery, aortic surgery, and surgical treatment of arrhythmia. He has been Head of Service, Lead Clinician, and Clinical Lead of Cardiac Services in the North of Scotland. He authored many publications and concluded several clinical trials. He trained and supervised many medical students and postgraduate trainees.
He is a member, fellow and executive of several institutions, professional bodies and international societies in Europe, USA, Africa and Asia. He is a Burgess (Honorary Councillor) of the City of Aberdeen in Scotland.

Mr El-Shafei has cared for and treated several thousands of patients. He offers all kinds of adult cardiothoracic procedures including coronary bypass surgery, cardiac valve and less invasive surgery and aortic surgery. He has demonstrated history, excellent records and professional reputation of working in Aberdeen, Glasgow and elsewhere. He offers professional services in cardiothoracic surgery, which include clinical, medico-legal and occupational consultations. He performs surgical treatment and care for the majority of cardiothoracic conditions.
