Personal Profile

Chris is a consultant head and neck surgeon (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon) who lives and works in Aberdeen. He has qualified as both a surgeon and a dentist, is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a Member of the Dental Faculty of the same College. His NHS practice is as a member of head and neck cancer team in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. He is clinical lead for the Grampian Oral and Maxillofacial surgery service. He has a wide clinical practice including management of cancers of the face, mouth, jaws, neck and skin, management of trauma of the head and neck, facial reconstruction after trauma and cancer, complex dental surgery and management of conditions affecting the mouth.  

After studying dentistry in Dundee and medicine and in Aberdeen, he completed his specialist surgical training in the Liverpool head and neck unit. He spent time as a visiting scholar in the Chang Gung Hospital Plastic surgery unit in Taipei, Taiwan, and has been awarded the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Shanghai Head and Neck fellowship. Chris began his consultant career in Dundee before moving to Aberdeen in 2021. 

Chris has a keen academic interest and is actively involved in running and recruiting patients to cancer research trials. His main interest is in reducing the impact of cancer surgery and improving patients function, appearance and quality of life.  As a trainee he set up and led the Maxillofacial Trainee Research Collaborative that runs large, multi-site research projects across the whole UK. He has published widely and regularly teaches and lectures undergraduates and postgraduates locally, nationally and internationally.  He has twice won the Scottish Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery prize.
