About Mr Azhar Iqbal

Personal Profile

Mr Azhar Iqbal is an experienced Consultant Plastic Surgeon with over three decades of expertise in plastic surgery and more than 20 years at consultant level. His extensive training has taken him through some of the UK’s most respected medical centres, including those in London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Cambridge, Devon, and currently Liverpool.

Mr Iqbal specialises in a broad range of reconstructive and aesthetic procedures, including breast reconstruction, skin cancer surgery, facial palsy treatment, hand surgery, and cosmetic interventions. His clinical interests span both functional and aesthetic aspects of plastic surgery, offering patients comprehensive care tailored to their individual needs.

Mr Iqbal began his surgical training in 1993 after achieving his FRCS, the minimum requirement for entry into specialist plastic surgery training. Following 12 years of progressive training, he was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Surgical Training (CCST) in 2004 and appointed as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Whiston Hospital, Liverpool in 2005. He has completed fellowships in both oncoplastic breast surgery and cosmetic surgery, enhancing his expertise in breast aesthetics and reconstruction. His academic qualifications include FRCS in General Surgery, FRCS in Plastic Surgery, and an MSc in Health Information Sciences.

In addition to his clinical work, Mr Iqbal is deeply committed to education and professional development. He serves as an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons and has held the role of Programme Director for Plastic Surgery in the Mersey Deanery for six years. He regularly teaches on national and international courses, including cadaveric surgical training and exam preparation programmes.

His voluntary work includes ongoing international projects, particularly in Pakistan, where he has contributed to training and development in the aftermath of the 2005 earthquake. He has also been invited to teach in countries such as Greece and Egypt.

Mr Iqbal believes in a patient-centred approach, guided by honesty, empathy, and collaboration. He encourages patients to be fully informed and actively involved in their treatment decisions. His philosophy is simple: “a happy patient makes a happy surgeon,” and he takes pride in the many satisfied patients and successful trainees he has mentored throughout his career. Plastic surgery, he explains, is a unique specialty that demands a blend of technical precision, anatomical knowledge, and artistic insight. Unlike procedures limited to specific body areas, plastic surgery requires mastery across diverse regions and techniques, making it one of the most demanding and rewarding fields in medicine.
