In addition to his surgical practice, Mr Abdulkarim holds a senior clinical leadership position at St Richard’s Hospital, where he plays a key role in shaping orthopaedic services and enhancing the patient journey across the region. His involvement in strategic service development, multidisciplinary coordination, and quality improvement initiatives reflects a broader commitment to excellence beyond the operating theatre. Earning a Master of Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in 2010, Mr Abdulkarim was subsequently admitted to the prestigious Irish national training programme for trauma and orthopaedic surgery. This intensive eight-year specialist training spanned several renowned institutions and centres of excellence. At the conclusion of his training Mr Abdulkarim was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and a certificate of completion of specialist Orthopaedic training subsequently he was granted a fellowship of the European board of Orthopaedic and traumatology.
Following his formal training he was awarded 2 prestigious fellowships of the Irish Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery IITOS/RCSI Travelling Fellowship in Surgery and the Irish Orthopaedic Association Travelling Fellowship Award.
His post-CCT subspeciality fellowships training included 2 further years in Cambridge University Hospital at Addenbrooke and at Southmead Hospital in Bristol
He is renowned for his substantial contributions to orthopaedic research, authoring numerous articles in top-tier journals and presenting at over 100 international conferences.
Mr Abdulkarim's dedication to medical education and quality improvement is manifest in his roles as a visiting lecturer and academic supervisor. In these capacities, he has played a crucial role in shaping the careers of the next generation of medical professionals. Mr Abdulkarim is a member of the faculty of sport & exercise medicine in both the UK and Ireland. His approach to patient care is deeply personalised; he focuses on creating tailored treatment plans that align with individual patient needs and support informed decision-making. He is formally recognised by the General Medical Council as a surgical trainer for younger surgeons.
Globally recognised for his surgical acumen and scholarly contributions, Mr Abdulkarim has been the recipient of numerous awards and honours, such as the prestigious Cappagh medals in orthopaedic surgery. Notably, he represented the Irish Orthopaedic Institute at the 'Best of the Best' session of the British Orthopaedic Association for two consecutive years. His active membership in various orthopaedic organizations underscores his commitment to the continuous advancement of orthopaedic practices.
