Our treatment options for joint pain

No matter how complex your needs, we can help. Our orthopaedic consultants are highly skilled in performing a broad range of surgical treatment options for joint pain – from minor procedures to major surgeries for more unique conditions, you can trust in us to provide experience and expertise when you need it most.

  • Joint replacement surgery is usually recommended when your pain is severe and hasn’t improved with other treatment options such as physiotherapy and steroid injection therapy.

Total hip replacement surgery is a major operation but it’s very common and offers brilliant results. Our consultants perform thousands of these each year.

During the procedure, your consultant will remove your entire hip joint and replace it with a prosthesis. This is sometimes referred to as an implant or as an artificial hip. The prosthesis is usually constructed of metal, ceramic, plastic, or a combination of the three.

  • The Mako® system is a highly advanced way to perform joint replacement surgery and other types of surgery to repair damage to your joint.

The robot does not replace your consultant to perform the procedure – but it uses an innovative navigation system to guide your surgeon through it with increased accuracy and precision.

This improved accuracy can mean a shorter stay in hospital, a faster recovery period, improved feel and function in your affected joint, and less risk of problems occurring in the future.

  • In a similar fashion to hip replacement surgery, this involves your consultant removing your entire knee joint and replacing it with a prosthesis.

Your consultant will begin by making an incision in your knee to access your patella (kneecap). They will then remove the damaged ends of your femur (thighbone) and tibia (shinbone). The ends of these bones are measured and shaped to fit your prosthesis.

Many joint replacements can last for up to 25 years, eliminating joint pain and restoring full function to your joint.

  • This is surgery to replace or repair your damaged or diseased joint. The procedure often involves resurfacing a joint that has been worn out by arthritis, which causes the protective cartilage that surrounds your joints to break down.

Your consultant will use specially designed tools to repair damage to the areas of your joint where cartilage has deteriorated.

The main aim is smooth out the surface of your joint and make sure that you can move your joint more freely after surgery.

In some cases, your consultant might need to remove parts of your bone and replace it with a prosthesis (a partial joint replacement), but they will try to reserve as much natural bone as possible.

  • This procedure is performed using a technique called knee arthroscopy, also known as keyhole surgery.

Knee arthroscopy is performed by making small cuts in your knee, through which your consultant passes an arthroscope (a thin, metal tube with a light and camera at one end). This is attached to a monitor, allowing your consultant to perform with precision.

They will begin by making one or more small cuts on the front and side of your knee. Through these, they will insert the arthroscope, as well as specially designed surgical tools. These are used to remove your damaged ligament and replace it with a segment of tendon (graft).

Your consultant will drill sockets into your thighbone and shinbone to accurately position the graft, which is fixed to your bones with special screws. The graft will serve as surface on which new ligament tissue can grow.

  • These are just some of the many surgical treatment options we offer at our hospitals in Birmingham and the West Midlands.

Our orthopaedic consultant performs thousands of these per year, so you can guarantee you'll be in safe hands.

  • Your recovery after surgery is an extremely important part of your healthcare journey, helping you experience long-lasting results and embrace life again.

We offer advanced aftercare packages including tailored physiotherapy services and regular follow-up appointments to ensure you get back doing the things you love quickly.

Your healthcare team will not only build your recovery plan for you, but also give you the tools and advice you need to follow it properly.

No person recovers at the same rate, so your programme will be personalised to your individual needs and goals for the future.

  • Our prices vary depending on your individual needs.

Tailored prices for tailored treatment

Your initial consultations and treatment are tailored to your needs, meaning the cost of surgery can differ from person to person depending on how long they need to be in hospital, their aftercare programme, and other unique factors.

  • Our fixed-price packages include the cost of your surgery and six months of aftercare. However, any pre-surgery diagnostic tests and your consultant's outpatient appointment consultation fee are charged separately.

If you're paying for yourself, our flexible payment options can help you spread the cost of your payment across a time that suits you.

We offer fixed-term monthly payment plans over one to five years with no deposit required. If you decide to pay over 10 months, you will pay interest-free. If you are paying for a longer period, you will pay 14.9% APR.

  • If you have private health insurance, your surgery will usually be covered by your provider. Speak to your insurer directly to find out.
