If you have hip pain, a hip joint injection may be considered.
A hip injection involves an injection directly into the hip joint.
It can be used to help diagnose the problem and identify the cause of pain.
It may also be used to offer pain relief by reducing inflammation in the hip joint, which is commonly caused by arthritis.
Hip injection treatment can be performed with local anaesthesia or a combination of local anaesthesia and steroids.
It’s performed in the operating theatre with X-ray guidance.
A steroid injection for hip pain works by reducing inflammation and offering hip pain relief.
If used to help treat pain caused by arthritis, the swelling and inflammation will be reduced and the pain and stiffness will be alleviated.
If used to detect the source of pain, and pain relief is felt immediately afterwards, your orthopaedic consultant may diagnose the hip as the cause of the problem.
It may take a few days for the hip injection to work and for pain relief to be felt.
However, some people will notice the effects a few hours later. It’s possible that pain may increase slightly as the numbing medicine wears off, and the injection starts to take effect.
You may notice a decrease in hip pain between two to five days after the injection.
Hip injection treatment is very safe and has minimal risks and complications.
However, some side effects may be experienced. These can include:
- Allergic reaction
- Pain and discomfort
- A flare up of symptoms
- Infection
- Temporary bruising
- Depigmentation at the site of injection
