During this appointment, which will be with one of our Orthopaedic Surgeons (bones and joints specialists), your Consultant will speak to you in depth about your hand or wrist pain in order to identify its cause. They may also send you for diagnostic tests if needed.

One we know what’s causing your problems, our multidisciplinary team will put together a bespoke treatment plan to help manage your pain and improve mobility. This might include a course of physiotherapy, or perhaps some pain medication.

However, if less invasive treatments are not enough to manage your pain, you might be recommended surgery on your hand or wrist.

Carpal tunnel release surgery

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is caused by pressure on your median nerve (a large nerve that passes through the front on your wrist). This can lead to pain and numbness in your hand and fingers. Carpal tunnel release surgery can remove pressure on this nerve and relieve any pain or numbness.

Hand surgery for Dupuytren’s disease starting from £1656*

Dupuytren’s disease is a condition that causes one or more of your fingers to bend in towards your wrist. Hand surgery for Dupuytren’s disease can help straighten the affected fingers. It could involve a needle fasciotomy, where a needle is placed across multiple areas in your palm and affected finger to loosen and straighten your finger; or a fasciectomy, where a surgical cut is made across your affected finger and palm to straighten your finger.

Hand ligament reconstruction surgery

Your ligaments are connective bands of tissue that attach the bones in your hand to one another. Sometimes an injury can damage or tear these ligaments. In this instance, surgery can be performed to repair the damage.

Wrist arthroscopy starting from £3,411*

A wrist arthroscopy is a keyhole operation where small incisions are made around your wrist joint to allow an arthroscope (a thin tube with a camera) is be passed into the joint. This allows your Orthopaedic Surgeon to view the inside of your wrist on a display monitor. Surgical instruments are then passed in through these same tiny incisions to treat problems inside your wrist.

A wrist arthroscopy can be used to perform treatments including torn ligaments repair, removing a ganglion cyst (a fluid-filled bump near your wrist joint or tendon), and extracting bone fragments from a wrist fracture.
