A hysteroscopy is a safe and effective procedure that involves looking inside your uterus, or womb to diagnose and treat any issues you may be experiencing. The procedure involves using a narrow telescope with a light and camera attached to the end of it called a hysteroscope. It is inserted through the vagina and cervix. It is carried out as an Outpatient procedure, meaning you do not have to stay in the hospital overnight, and has a minimal recovery time with no abdominal incisions required.

Most women don’t feel any pain during the procedure, although you may experience some cramping.

It is an effective way of examining and diagnosing a range of gynaecological issues, including:

  • Painful, heavy periods
  • Pelvic pain
  • Uterine fibroids and cervical polyps - non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb (uterus), made up of muscle and fibrous tissue, and ranging in size from a few millimetres to several centimetres
  • Potential changes as a result of a smear test
  • Post-menopausal or abnormal bleeding
  • Contraception complications

In some cases, your consultant can also treat these issues during the hysteroscopy.
