Initial consultations with Dermatology specialists are typically 20 minutes, and begin by taking a detailed medical history, as well as a full rundown of the symptoms you’ve been experiencing. Your consultant will wish to know:

What symptoms have you had?
How long have you had these symptoms?
Have you received any treatment for them yet? How effective were these treatments?
Have these symptoms been getting progressively worse?
How is it affecting you? Do you have any particular concerns (e.g. are you worried it may be skin cancer?)

Following this clinical history, they will carry out a physical examination of the affected area of your skin with a dermatoscope, a specialist device allowing intricate analysis of moles or skin lesions. Your consultant will then let you know if you require any additional diagnostic tests. These may involve:

Blood tests
Mole Check – Involving a top-to-toe dermoscopic assessment of all your moles and any suspicious mole is then promptly removed and sent for histology (evaluation under microscope).
Allergy testing – helping to highlight the specific substances that may trigger an allergic reaction
Biopsy – a small tissue sample taken from the affected area of your skin, sent to the labs for analysis, helping to identify the type of skin complaint or cancer/

Any other tests can then be arranged if appropriate. Once a diagnosis has been confirmed, you will have a follow-up appointment to discuss your treatment options, which are personalised to your specific diagnosis and your goals for recovery.

Certain conditions may require a surgical approach in treatment. This may include:

Excision/removal of skin lesion
Complex skin cancer surgery - which may involve plastic surgery if any reconstruction is needed
