A Health Assessment, also known as a health check or health screening, is a thorough check-up of your overall health. Health checks are performed by specialists to help you gain a better understanding of your physical and mental wellbeing, with the opportunity to detect and treat any underlying health issues in their early stages.
We currently offer the following levels of health screening at The Harbour Hospital:
Select
Our select health assessment includes a two-step, in-depth consultation with both a doctor and a health advisor, usually a nurse, to give you a rounded picture of your health. Additional concerns such as gynaecological cancers and a muscle and joint assessment are included. There is also extra time built into the assessment to allow you to discuss any other concerns you may have. You will come away with a personalised medical report approved by a GP.
Length of assessment: Up to 1 hour including nurse and doctor consultations.
Advanced
Our advanced health assessment is an in-depth look at your health and wellbeing, including your heart and lung function, comprehensive blood tests for calcium, liver and kidneys, cardiovascular and nervous system assessments and a head-to-toe physical exam with inspections for possible cancer risks like moles, lumps and bumps. There is extra time built into the assessment to allow you to discuss any other concerns you may have. You will come away with a personalised medical report approved by a GP.
Length of assessment: Up to 2 hours including nurse consultation and up to 1 hour with a doctor.
We offer a range of tests that can diagnose different conditions or detect your risk of developing health conditions that might run in your family. Some of those conditions include:
- Type 1 and 2 diabetes: If you have a family history of diabetes, then there are certain factors that can be monitored at a health assessment to help minimise your risk of developing the condition. These factors include a higher body mass index (BMI), polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS, formerly known as PCOS) and high blood pressure. Diabetes can also increase your LDL (bad) cholesterol levels which can in turn increase your risk of developing cardiovascular (heart) disease.
- Cardiovascular (heart) disease: If you have a family history of heart disease, then there are certain factors that can be monitored at a health assessment to help minimise your risk of developing the condition including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and being overweight. Your health assessment might include the monitoring of your cardiovascular risk score, which tells you if your risk of developing heart problems in the next 10 years is high, moderate or low.
