Supportive care is an approach to helping and supporting individuals with life-limiting illnesses.
It can enhance the day-to-day lives of those with a long-term diagnosis such as cancer, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), heart failure and neurological conditions including Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
The approach provides reassurance and enables individuals living with life-limiting illness, as well as those caring for them, to focus on what is really important. It encompasses pain relief, symptom control, treatment plans and care preferences. It can be particularly helpful during new treatment regimens or when goals change.
It is available to all individuals with a life-limiting illness, as well as their carer. A Supportive Care Consultant works alongside existing clinical teams to create a personalised care plan based on the physical and psychological needs of the individual.
You can ask for a referral to see our Supportive Care Consultant, Dr Declan Cawley. Alternatively, the professionals looking after you may prompt an initial referral so that your needs can be assessed. Dr Cawley holds a regular Outpatient Clinic for the management of pain and symptoms at The Chaucer Hospital. He also sees inpatients at the request of a referring Consultant.
Chaucer Hospital is working with Supportive Care UK LTD.
