A laparoscopic rectopexy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat rectal prolapse, a condition that happens when your rectum slips out of its normal position.

During the surgery, small incisions are made in your abdomen, and a laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera attached to the end of it) is inserted into the incision to guide your surgeon. Your rectum is then lifted and secured, often using sutures or mesh, to its correct position within your pelvis.

This procedure aims to restore normal function to your rectum and alleviate symptoms such as incontinence or discomfort. It can prevent further prolapse, all with minimal scarring and a faster recovery time than with traditional surgery.

Rectal prolapse can occur in individuals of various ages, but it is more common in certain groups of people. It is especially common in women over the age of 50 due to a weakening of the pelvic floor muscles, which can happen after giving birth.

Though rare, rectal prolapse can also occur in children, particularly those with cystic fibrosis or other conditions that cause chronic coughing or constipation.

At The Alexandra Hospital, we have a team of brilliant general surgeons who have performed thousands of surgical repairs for a rectal prolapse throughout their careers. They are trained in both traditional and robotic surgery with the da Vinci surgical system, helping you recover from a rectal prolapse and get back to everyday life.

The da Vinci system is a highly advanced surgical robot used for surgery. This intuitive form of equipment allows your consultant to perform your surgery to a high precision.

This equipment facilitates minute movements and a highly enhanced view of inside your body. This allows your surgeon to perform the minimally invasive surgery with 10x the visual clarity than traditional surgery. The robot is made up of several robotic arms. Your consultant will sit at a console, or control centre, near your hospital bed. The robot translates every movement your consultant makes in real time, bending and turning specialist instruments that move just like a human hand, but with a more expansive range of precision and smoother motion.

“I control the robotic system. We use the technology for bowel cancer surgery, rectal prolapse operations, and so many others. We also work with gynaecologists to treat endometriosis. With robotics, we can perform surgeries with very small incisions and increased accuracy and precision. The advantages are that you have a shorter stay in hospital, less pain after the procedure, and a better recovery in the long term.” Mr Sajal Rai, consultant colorectal and general surgeon

Your surgeon can use the da Vinci technology to make minute incisions, reducing the risk of scarring and ensuring you experience excellent outcomes and long-lasting results
