About Mr Sajal Rai

Personal Profile

Mr Sajal Rai undertook specialist colorectal surgery training at The University Hospital of Leicester and was awarded the Doctor of Medicine (MD) research degree by The Leicester University in 2007. He was appointed as Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon with special interest in laparoscopic colorectal surgery at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport in January 2010, with the main aim of developing the laparoscopic colorectal service at the Trust.

He is very involved in mentoring and coaching his surgical colleagues at the Trust in laparoscopic colorectal surgery. He has an interest in pelvic floor disorders and offers laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy for rectal prolapse, as well as other procedures for rectal prolapse. He works jointly with gynaecologists for pelvic endometriosis surgery where the bowel is involved.

Mr Rai is a highly experienced General and Colorectal Surgeon, specialising in disorders of the intestines, in particular those of the colon and rectum. His particular area of interest is treating these disorders by keyhole or laparoscopic surgery. He is now offering robotic surgery for bowel cancer and other benign bowel disorders.

He also treats general disorders, such as all types of hernias and gallstones by laparoscopic surgery. He has a keen interest in common ano-rectal conditions, like piles or haemorrhoids, anal fissures and fistula in ano, and offers treatment for these conditions.

He has been appointed as the Project and Clinical Lead in developing and implementing the Enhanced Recovery Program for patients undergoing major colorectal surgery at The Stockport NHS Foundation Trust. Recently, the Trust has upgraded its program to ERAS Plus, which involved appointment of a dedicated ERAS nurse and establishing a pre-operative Surgery School for patients due to undergo major bowel surgery for colorectal cancer.

He has been the Clinical Director for the Greater Manchester Colorectal Pathway Board for the last 4 years, and was recently reappointed again to continue. The board has launched the Greater Manchester Best-timed Colorectal Pathway Project that aims to achieve the 62-day treatment target for colorectal cancer patients across the Greater Manchester region.

Mr Rai has also been asked to represent the North West region in an NHS England initiative to develop a National Standard of Care (SoC) for colorectal cancer.
