What is paediatrics?

Paediatrics is the area of medicine that looks after infants, children, and adolescents. You might also hear it referred to as child health, or as the care of children and young people (CYP).

Our specialist private Paediatric consultants and nurses can provide quick diagnosis and treatment for a wide variety of health conditions, such as:

  • Asthma/respiratory
  • Autism/ADHD clinics
  • Allergies
  • Dental extractions
  • Dermatology
  • Dieticians
  • ENT
  • Gastroenterology
  • General bone pain
  • General pediatrics
  • Gynecologists
  • Infections and surgery
  • Ophthalmology
  • Orthopaedics
  • Phlebotomy for children of all ages
  • Physiotherapy
  • Urological problems

If your child requires surgery, you will be invited to visit the hospital in advance, for a pre-admission visit. This will be an opportunity for you, and your child, to familiarise yourself with the surroundings and ask any questions you may have.

We see children from 0-18 years through our outpatient services, and from 3-18 years for day-case and inpatient procedures.

At The Alexandra Hospital, we have a range of equipment and facilities to support your child during their visit. These include:

Sensory room

We have an on-site sensory room created for children who may have extra learning needs, sensory processing disorders, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This quiet space is allocated for children who may need a calm atmosphere during their visit. Equipment in the sensory room includes:

  • Sensory lighting
  • Sensory touch plates
  • Bean bags
  • Weighted blankets

Specialist Clinics

We also offer specialist clinics dedicated to supporting our young patients. We offer two specialist clinics: An Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) clinic and an autism clinic.
Both aim to support each child and their parents/carers to understand any specific needs their child may have, provide a diagnosis (if required) and also create a plan for how to support their child post-diagnosis.

  • Themed ensuite bedrooms

You won’t always need a GP referral to see one of our private paediatric consultants. If you don’t have a referral and would like to go private, give us a call and we will let you know what to do.

We know that for all family members, visiting hospital can be an uneasy time. We aim to ensure your visit is as stress-free as much as possible. When visiting The Alexandra Hospital, you and your child will be greeted by our friendly reception team, who will check you in and direct you to our dedicated children’s until. Here your child can enjoy our playroom whilst waiting to see your consultant.

Once your appointment begins, your consultant may need to take some measurements from your child depending on the circumstances.

Your specialist will listen to your concerns, take time to answer any questions you may have and advise if any treatment or diagnostics are required.

If you have any concerns following your appointment, please contact the hospital where one of our colleagues will be happy to answer any of your questions.

If your child requires surgery, you will be invited to visit the hospital in advance, for a pre-admission visit. This will be an opportunity for you, and your child, to familiarise yourself with the surroundings and ask any questions you may have.

On the day of your child’s surgery they will be looked after in our designated paediatric ward. We take care of everything so that you don't have to worry.

For our younger visitors, you can read a special story book ahead of your visit for surgery so that you can talk to your child about what to expect in an age-appropriate way.

You can view our story book here.

In addition to this, the Royal College of Anaesthetists has created a fun and easy-to-understand story to help children know what to expect from a general anaesthetic, using familiar Beano characters to help reduce any anxiety. Read 'Dennis has an Anaesthetic' here.

Our children and young person's services are available to people with private health insurance as well as people who are paying for their own treatment.

Many parents don't realise that their children are included in their private medical insurance policies, so it's always worth checking with your insurer.

If you choose to self-pay for treatment, you can take advantage of our flexible payment options, which allow you to spread the cost over a period of 10 months to five years.

Going private is more affordable than you think.
