Breast screening

At The Alexandra Hospital we have a dedicated Women’s Health Unit, with a separate waiting area offering additional privacy to patients who need a breast assessment, and live in Manchester, Stockport or Cheshire.

At The Alexandra Hospital, we offer a One Stop Clinic where patients can attend a consultation, have a private mammogram/ultrasound and receive the results the same day. We recommend allowing a minimum of two to three hours for the whole visit.

The Alexandra also offers a private Breast Screening Service for patients wishing to have a mammographic screening, and a Family History Service to determine whether you are at a higher risk of developing breast cancer. If necessary, our experienced Breast nurses will advise you on the treatment options available.

Should you need to have further treatment or surgery, our private Oncology Centre operates a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) who will review your case and provide you with a personalised treatment plan to suit your diagnoses and needs.

At your first consultation you will be seen by a private breast surgeon who will take a full history and examine your breasts and underarms. If necessary, they will recommend further tests.

A private mammogram can help identify breast cancer in its early stages and is usually recommended to women over the age of 40. The scan uses a low dosage, to examine the breast, and usually takes around 30 minutes.

We also have a tomosynthesis mammogram machine which is a form of 3D mammography with the capability of picking up smaller breast cancers. This is particularly useful for women with dense breasts.

An MRI scan, magnetic resonance imaging, produces 2D and 3D images of the inside of the body. A Breast MRI Scan will identify any abnormalities or lumps that cannot be seen or felt from the outside.

This particular scan may be recommended to you, by your surgeon, if you have breast implants or dense breast tissue.

A breast cyst presents as a small lump filled with fluid; it is usually harmless and is common in patients around the age of the menopause.

If you are concerned about a particular cyst, if it is large or causing you discomfort, a specialist can drain the cyst using a fine needle or syringe.

A breast biopsy is used to investigate abnormalities on the skin and in the breast tissue. A specialist will take a small tissue sample from the breast and send it to the laboratory for further tests.

A biopsy can determine the cause of a growth or sore and is used to diagnose cancer. The results of the biopsy can take 2-4 working days. We will discuss the examination with you and whether there is anything for concern.

Should you need to have further treatment or surgery, The Alexandra Hospital has a respected, private Oncology Centre who will provide you with a personalised treatment plan.

The Support Group takes place on the second Thursday of every month, from 6pm-8pm, at the hospital. There is no need to book your place in advance; you are welcome to turn up on the evening.

Accessing private healthcare is easy, whether you choose to pay directly or use private medical insurance.

If you are paying for yourself, we can usually offer an upfront cost which you can then choose to pay in full or access one of our easy payment options.

If you have insurance, we can arrange direct settlement with your insurance provider, although you should check in advance to see if your treatment is covered. For more information, visit our private medical insurance page.
