Neuro-ophthalmology is a specialist branch of ophthalmology investigating and managing a host of visual disorders caused by disease of the nervous system.

The eyes play a critical role and are the first link in the visual pathway, acting as the receptors of sight. This receptor works to convert the light energy to electrical energy in neurological impulses. These neurological impulses go through the optic nerve to the optic chiasm and via the optic tracts to the occipital cortex, which has many connections to many areas of the brain. Your vision is a key influencer on memory, emotion and movement, and as such is pertinent to your overall quality of life.

At Eye Care Scotland, our neuro-ophthalmology service sees patients affected by a variety of conditions and impairments including double vision, unequal pupils, strokes, brain tumours, sudden loss of part of the visual field, and sudden out of focus vision.

If you have an eye problem, it is important a Consultant Ophthalmologist assesses the structures of your eye to identify any possible abnormalities. However, if the problem identified is behind your eye in the visual pathway, or in an area/s of your brain which influence your vision, it becomes harder to identify the issue – this is the purpose of a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in neuro-ophthalmology.

There are a breadth of circumstances in which you may require a neuro-ophthalmology consultation at Eye Care Scotland. There are a diverse and complex range of conditions that can present and with that numerous potential management and treatment options available. Your specialist Consultant Ophthalmologist will assess your neuro-ophthalmological condition in order to carefully diagnose you, before subsequently presenting a tailored treatment plan designed to manage, treat, or improve your condition.

Our consultants are supported by a full clinical team of optometrists, orthoptists, ophthalmic nurses and ophthalmic practitioners - all of whom play a vital part in ensuring patients are well informed and cared for throughout their journey.

Our entire patient pathway takes place within a clinical environment, and we work to the highest standard of governance whilst following stringent processes to ensure quality outcomes for patients.

With enhanced patient pathways and streamlined consultation-to-treatment journeys at the heart of Eye Care Scotland at Ross Hall Clinic Braehead you can be confident in receiving the highest levels of care throughout your whole journey with us - from diagnoses to treatment and right through to your recovery.
