ENT surgeons commonly treat conditions affecting the senses, such as smell and taste problems or hearing and balance disorders. They also manage patients with conditions that affect breathing and swallowing as well as assessing and treating those patients with head and neck tumours.
ENT consultants manage people of all ages. Children (3 plus) are commonly seen by consultants for assessment of hearing loss or to treat recurrent problems with tonsils and adenoids.
The type of treatment you will receive will be tailored to you and depend on your symptoms, age, lifestyle and other health factors. If further diagnostic tests or treatments are required, these will be explained to you during your consultation.
Adults are regularly referred by a GP for the following conditions:
Ear - Adult patients may suffer from hearing loss that requires ENT treatment caused by age, wax impaction, tympanic membrane perforations, trauma and infections.
Nose - Nasal obstruction, nasal crusting, diminished sense of smell, facial discomfort and a watery nose are the commonest symptoms to be reviewed by an ENT Surgeon.
Throat - Throat conditions managed by ENT surgeons include sore throat, hoarseness, pain in the neck and swallowing disorders. ENT surgeons also manage conditions that affect the thyroid gland.
Your consultant will be able to discuss the appropriate investigations required for a fast and accurate diagnosis. We routinely conduct investigations on patients utilising a range of imaging equipment, including ultrasound, CT scan, MRI scan and flexible endoscopy.
When you book an initial ENT consultation at Ross Hall Clinic Braehead, our enquiries team will give you all the information you need to choose the right specialist for your specific needs and offer an appointment at a time to suit you.
During your initial consultation, your consultant will learn about your medical history to get a clear picture of the problem and perform a thorough symptom directed physical examination.
Depending on your specific symptoms or condition, your ENT specialist may request some further investigative tests to assess your condition. In some cases, it might be possible for you to have a scan or test on the same day as your initial consultation, but usually, we would arrange the test for a few days to a couple of weeks after your initial appointment at a time and day that suits you.

Inner ear problems are often associated with balance disturbance, and to diagnose the exact cause of this symptom audiometry, directed examination and imaging may be required.
Nose - Problems in the nasal cavity can often be accurately diagnosed from a simple headlight examination. Sometimes a flexible nasal endoscopy under local anaesthesia is required to give an improved view. Imaging with a CT scan or MRI scan may be required depending on the problem.
Throat - When patients present with problems related to the throat a simple history and headlight examination may resolve the issue. If the problem is hoarseness or a lump in the throat, a very fine endoscope attached to a small camera may be inserted into the nose to allow a close inspection of the troublesome area. This procedure is conducted under local anaesthesia in the clinic.
Patients visiting Ross Hall Clinic Braehead for concerning lumps in the neck will receive rapid assessment and reassurance, as the majority of neck lumps are benign. An ultrasound will usually be performed by skilled Radiologists and is often available within a week.
Investigations:
Once the tests have been completed, and the results are ready, a follow-up appointment will be arranged with your consultant to discuss the results and determine the best form of tailored treatment for you.
