What is cosmetic surgery?

Cosmetic surgery is a type of procedure done to change your appearance by enhancing, altering or reshaping specific parts of your body.

Cosmetic surgery is very common, with over 27,000 cosmetic procedures being performed in the UK each year. Many people choose to get plastic surgery to help improve their self-confidence, self-esteem and mental wellbeing as they achieve the appearance they’re most confident in.

What is the difference between plastic and cosmetic surgery?

Plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery are different specialities that both involve changing the body's appearance or function. Cosmetic surgery is primarily carried out to change a person's appearance for aesthetic purposes. However, the aim of plastic surgery is more focused on restoring and repairing both bodily function and appearance.

Plastic surgery is often used to repair or reconstruct damaged tissue and skin. Cosmetic surgery is more often used to enhance or improve people’s appearance for personal reasons.

How much does cosmetic treatment cost at Mount Alvernia Hospital?

The cost of cosmetic surgery will depend on various factors, including the specific procedure you are having.

When you are paying for your own treatment, you can pay in full or you can take advantage of our flexible payment options, which allow you to spread the cost over a period of up to five years - with interest free options available.

Does private health insurance cover cosmetic surgery?

It's unusual for cosmetic procedures to be covered by private health insurance, so in most cases our patients pay for treatment themselves.

In very select cases, your cosmetic procedure may be covered by your health insurance. However, we advise you to seek confirmation from your provider first to make sure this applies to you.

Some of the most common cosmetic surgery treatments we perform include:

Breast reduction surgery

A breast reduction can make your breasts smaller and improve their proportion in relation to your body.

For the many women struggling with the effects of overly large breasts, a breast reduction can offer relief in improving physical problems caused by their size, such as back pain and neck pain. It can also improve their confidence along with the new shape.

The procedure of breast reduction surgery involves making an incision around the nipple and horizontally from the nipple to the breast crease to remove excess skin and tissue. The nipple will then be repositioned to complement the new breast shape and create a natural result.

Breast augmentation

Breast augmentation involves the enlargement of the breasts. If you are looking to increase your breast size, improve the shape of your breasts, or balance breasts of different sizes, breast augmentation can help you achieve the desired result.

Breast augmentation surgery will involve the insertion of implants beneath the breast tissue to increase the size of the breast. Prior to surgery, your consultant will discuss what your desired breast size is, the result you seek, and their recommendations. After your operation, you may be able to go home the same day or the day after surgery.

Breast lift

If you would like to improve the shape of your breasts, then breast uplift surgery might be the right choice for you. You might choose to have a breast lift if your breasts sag or your nipples point downward, creating a drooping appearance. If you are conscious of this, a breast lift might also help to boost your self-image and confidence.

The procedure of a breast lift involves removing part of the breast skin to be able to lift the breast and reshape the remaining tissue into a higher, firmer shape. Unlike breast reduction surgery, you will retain all your breast tissue with only the excess breast skin removed.

Liposuction

If you are looking to alter your body shape for a more toned appearance, then liposuction might be an option to consider. Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure used to remove unwanted excess body fat, which involves sucking out small areas of fat that are hard to lose with exercise and a healthy diet. It is normally performed on specific parts of the body where deposits of fat tend to collect such as the stomach, hips thighs, buttocks and upper arms.

Tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty)

A tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat from the stomach to improve the shape of the stomach and tighten the abdominal muscles, to give you a firmer and flatter stomach.

The aim is to remove excess skin that can't be reduced through exercise. A tummy tuck can also be considered if you have weaker abdominal muscles after pregnancy or excess skin from weight loss.

Tummy tuck surgery is not directed toward weight reduction, and it is not suitable for those who are overweight. It is designed to remove only as much excess skin and fatty tissue as is practical and safe.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty surgery is a procedure to change the shape or appearance of your nose. The procedure can be considered if you are unhappy with the size and/or shape of your nose.

There are two ways to perform the procedure. Your surgeon can make your nose smaller in an operation called a reduction rhinoplasty, or larger in an augmentation rhinoplasty. It’s important to be sure about what you don’t like about your nose so that your surgeon knows what you would like to change.
