Gynaecology is the area of medicine concerning the female reproductive system. You might want to see a gynaecologist if you are experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Itching or irritation of the vulva or vagina
  • Pelvic pain
  • Changes in menstrual cycle or symptoms
  • Abdominal or pelvic swelling
  • Unexplained weight changes
  • Changes in urinary or bowel habits

It's important to note that these symptoms can occur due to various gynaecological conditions. Not all symptoms necessarily indicate a serious problem. However, persistent or severe symptoms should be assessed by a doctor or consultant gynaecologist for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Prompt medical attention is essential for identifying and addressing gynaecological conditions effectively.

We understand that gynaecological issues can be concerning and embarrassing. We strive to create a welcoming, professional, and reassuring environment for our patients. You will be treated with dignity, respect and empathy at all times.

Your initial consultation will involve a discussion about your medical history and gynaecological concerns. We will also discuss any relevant family medical history.

Depending on the circumstances, a physical examination may be conducted to assess your overall health and specific gynaecological concerns. The consultant may recommend further additional diagnostic tests.

Based on the findings from the examination and any diagnostic tests, your consultant will guide you through all available treatment options, ensuring you're actively involved in the decision-making process. This may include medication, lifestyle modifications, and/or surgical procedures.

Whether you are experiencing menstruation issues or have pelvic pain, our team will strive to help reduce your symptoms and make the right decisions for you. Treatment for gynaecological issues varies depending on the specific condition and individual factors such as your age and overall health.

Non-surgical treatments include:

  • Biopsy and treatment for abnormal smears
  • Vulval biopsies
  • Insertion and removal of coils

Gynaecological diagnostic and surgical procedures that we offer:

  • Hysteroscopy: diagnostic and treatment procedure using a thin, lighted scope inserted into the uterus. A hysteroscopic procedure may be used to diagnose and treat intrauterine conditions such as uterine polyps, fibroids, or adhesions.
  • Laparoscopic surgery: minimally invasive surgery which allows the consultant to operate through small incisions in the stomach. This results in less scarring and shorter recovery times. Laparoscopic procedures, such as laparoscopic excision of endometriosis or ovarian cystectomy, may be performed to diagnose and treat various gynaecological conditions.
  • Hysterectomy: surgical removal of the uterus. A hysterectomy may be recommended for conditions such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, or uterine cancer.
  • Pelvic floor repairs (non-mesh): Surgery to correct pelvic floor disorders without using synthetic mesh. Pelvic floor repair procedures are designed to address pelvic floor disorders, such as pelvic organ prolapse (POP) or urinary incontinence, by restoring support to the pelvic organs and tissues

If surgery is required, you will have your procedure at Albyn Hospital in Aberdeen under the care of the same consultant you saw at Inverness Outreach Clinic.
