At Goring Hall Hospital, we offer private SpaceOAR Hydrogel treatment to patients in Worthing, Pulborough or Horsham, to help reduce radiation damage to the rectum when you are having treatment for prostate cancer.

SpaceOAR hydrogel is clinically proven to reduce the long-term side effects associated with radiotherapy. These include:

  • Rectal bleeding
  • Bowel dysfunction
  • Incontinence

The treatment is designed to improve quality of life as well as sexual function.

What is Private SpaceOAR Hydrogel Treatment and why is it used?

SpaceOAR stands for Spacing Organs at Risk. It is a hydrogel that is injected into the body, which is designed to reduce radiation damage to the rectum when you are having treatment for prostate cancer.

What can I expect from the Private SpaceOAR Hydrogel Treatment in Worthing?

The treatment involves a minimally invasive procedure, which is done under anaesthetic (it may be either local or general). It takes around 30 minutes.

Our private Consultant Urologist uses a needle to inject the gel into the area between your prostate and rectum.

The soft gel acts as a spacer between the prostate and the rectum, reducing how much radiation your healthy tissue is exposed to during radiotherapy treatment.

The gel is made largely of water. Following the radiotherapy, the gel breaks down and is naturally cleared from your body within 3-6 months.
