Hip Replacement Surgery at Winterbourne Hospital Kate Palframan's Story

Kate, a 54-year-old travel business owner from Dorchester, underwent hip replacement surgery at Winterbourne Hospital in 2024.

After years of persistent discomfort and a gradual loss of mobility, the procedure, carried out by Consultant Orthopaedic Specialist Mr Caesar Wek, transformed Kate's life.

Now fully recovered and pain free, Kate shares her journey in the hope of encouraging others not to ignore early signs of joint pain and to seek help when something doesn't feel right.

Kate's symptoms and journey to diagnosis

A former commercial and private Flight Attendant for over two decades, Kate has always led an active lifestyle. She even worked as a personal fitness trainer, regularly running 10 kilometres most days.

"I was used to being on my feet all day, and then suddenly, I couldn't run anymore. I started feeling a sharp pain in my left leg, and everyday tasks slowly became more difficult."

Initially, Kate believed her symptoms were linked to other causes. She adjusted her diet, lost weight, and saw some short-term relief. However, by 2024, while working regularly cleaning holiday cottages, her discomfort had intensified, which was impacting her sleep, mobility, and ultimately, quality of life.

"I realised something had to change when I couldn't keep up with my two sons anymore. I couldn't play football with them or even catch a ball. I was taking the stairs one at a time and struggling to pick things up. That's when I knew I needed to seek help, not just for me, but for them too."

As a mother to two neurodiverse boys aged 11 and 16, Kate knew how important it was to be physically able and present in their lives. She visited her NHS GP, who referred her for an X-ray - an essential step in detecting abnormalities or damage in the bones.

The results revealed severe arthritis in her left hip. After trying a course of Physiotherapy with no improvement, Kate was referred to Mr Caesar Wek, Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon at Winterbourne Hospital.

From the moment Kate arrived at Winterbourne Hospital, she felt reassured by the warm and welcoming atmosphere.

"I was greeted by friendly reception staff and invited to relax with a drink in the waiting area. When Mr Wek came out to greet me personally, I instantly felt at ease. He explained everything clearly and showed me the X-ray, which revealed my hip was 'bone on bone'. A full replacement was essential."

While waiting for surgery, she remained as active as possible, continued to eat well, and followed low-impact exercise routines to prepare herself for the operation.

"The pre-assessment team at Winterbourne Hospital gave me fantastic advice and clear guidance for both the lead-up and recovery. Everyone made me feel completely supported and informed."

What is hip replacement surgery?

Hip replacement surgery is an operation to treat hip pain. It is a major operation but one that's both common and successful. At Circle Health Group, our experienced consultants perform thousands of hip replacements each year.

During the procedure, an Orthopaedic Surgeon will remove your damaged hip joint and replace it with a prosthesis. This is sometimes referred to as an implant or as an artificial hip. The prosthesis is usually constructed of metal, ceramic, plastic, or a combination of the three.

If you are living with a painful hip joint that's affecting your quality of life, hip replacement surgery could be the best treatment option to help you take control of your health and get you back on your feet, doing the things you love.

What happened during Kate's treatment?

On the day of her procedure, Kate was admitted to her private room where she met with Mr Wek and her Anaesthetist, both of whom walked her through what to expect.

"The nursing team went over my medications and helped me understand exactly what I would and wouldn't be able to do after surgery. Even the kitchen team were brilliant with taking my food order and making sure I had what I needed."

Kate was first on the surgery list that day. Within just a few hours, her hip replacement was complete.

"I never felt anxious or scared. The care was exceptional, and the staff checked in on me constantly. The only moment I felt unsure was the first time I stood up to go to the bathroom as my leg felt heavy from the anaesthetic, but I was never left unsupported."

Kate stayed one night and, with the help of the Physiotherapy team, was walking on crutches and managing stairs by the very next day.

Recovering at home

Kate returned home with the support of her partner, family, and friends, who helped with everything from school runs and shopping to simply keeping her company. She had also prepared with a few useful aids, including a cushion to elevate her leg and a grabber tool.

She couldn't drive for six weeks but was able to walk without crutches after two. She credits her fast recovery to staying active before the operation and maintaining gentle movement afterwards. This included avoiding sitting still for more than 45 minutes at a time, walking, and practising the stairs regularly.

Kate is now back to doing all the things she loves pain free. Whether it's playing football and tennis with her sons, going on long walks, or cycling on her Peloton bike three times a week, her mobility has been completely restored.

"I am sleeping better, can go up and down the stairs more easily, even run again! I didn't realise how restricted my life had become, and I will be forever grateful to Mr Wek and the amazing team at Winterbourne Hospital."
