About Zarrin Shaikh

Personal Profile

Dr Zarrin Shaikh is a Consultant Cardiologist with decades of experience.  She manages all aspects of general cardiology including chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, light-headedness, blackouts, high blood pressure, heart failure, angina and more. She is passionate about cardiac prevention and welcomes anyone who would like to discuss optimisation of risk factors such as cholesterol and blood pressure.

She knows how unsettling cardiac symptoms can be, so initial consultations are a full hour.  During this appointment, Dr Shaikh fully evaluates the issues and strives to get to the root causes of a patient's symptoms. This enables a personalised investigation and treatment plan to be developed with enough additional time for questions.

Training and Appointment

Dr Shaikh qualified from the University of Nottingham in 2001 and trained in teaching hospitals across Nottingham, Cardiff, London and Liverpool. This gave her an excellent grounding in both general medicine and cardiology. She has a special interest in both prevention of heart disease and cardiac imaging. She has lectured both locally and nationally in these areas. Her PhD was funded by the British Heart Foundation and examined the interplay between the cardiovascular system, respiratory system and sleep. This sparked an ongoing interest in the relationship between sleep and the heart.

Current Practice

Dr Shaikh currently works in clinics in Surrey and Berkshire. She hosts the Fresh Heart Podcast and has a weekly clinic at Mount Alvernia Hospital. Please do visit her website www.zarrinshaikh.com for more information on Dr Shaikh and the services she offers.

Clinical Interests

Dr Shaikh reviews and investigates patients with any initial cardiac symptoms including chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness, light-headedness, episodes of collapse and swollen ankles.

She is passionate about the prevention of heart disease through evidence-based lifestyle and medication options. Patients with high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels can therefore expect a comprehensive management plan.

She organises, performs and interprets all initial cardiac investigations. She has advanced training in imaging the heart using ultrasound (echocardiography) and cardiac MRI. She organises cardiac CT scans and invasive testing if necessary.

Her PhD sparked an ongoing interest in the relationship between sleep and cardiac health. She has a special interest in the cardiac issues and symptoms that arise during peri-menopause and menopause.
