Personal Profile

Mr Zachariah Koshy is a Consultant Ophthalmologist based at Ayrshire and Glasgow. He has over 20 years of experience in ophthalmology with a special interest in surgical and medical retina having gained fellowships in both these fields at the Tennent Institute in Glasgow and the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. His practice incorporates recent advances in these areas providing the complete spectrum of the latest treatments for retinal pathology.

Mr Koshy has innovated in the technique of suture less vitrectomy and has published and widely presented on this theme as well as retinal diagnostic protocols. Suture less vitrectomy affords a significantly more comfortable and faster post operative recovery than conventional surgery. The vast majority of these cases are now done as local anaesthetic day case procedures.

Mr Koshy has extensive experience in cataract surgery, particularly in complex situations. He has a significant role in providing cataract surgery training in the country and is on the panel that has devised pathways for cataract surgery in the UK. He has published and presented on ophthalmic anaesthesia and carries out cataract surgery under topical (no needle) anaesthesia. He offers the complete array of intra ocular lens implants such as multifocal and toric, delivered through microincision cataract surgery with the aim of reducing dependence on spectacles.

Mr Koshy enjoys teaching and as the Royal College Tutor, he co-ordinates and implements post graduate training in his unit and sits on the West of Scotland Post Graduate Training Committee. He provides teaching to ophthalmologists, optometrists and nurses through courses and seminars. He has authored teaching material and training modules for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and serves as faculty on courses at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and ESASO in Switzerland for trainee surgeons. Besides personal research projects Mr Koshy has taken part in multi centre research trials and is currently the principal investigator in a multi centre trial studying drug delivery for retinal conditions. He has over 80 papers, publications and posters to his credit at various national and international fora.

Outside his profession Mr Koshy’s interest is in all things aviation and he possesses a private pilot license.
