About Yadu Shankarappa

Personal Profile

The Orthopaedic practice philosophy for Mr Yadu Shankarappa is based, wherever possible on trying to maintain the patients natural joints and tissues and repair or reconstruct them, with a view to early return to normal function.

Following his Orthopaedic Training and specialisation Mr Shankarappa worked up to the level of Professor in Orthopaedics in a prestigious Medical College in Bangalore, India. He then received further training in the UK, Germany and Canada completing advanced Trauma and Orthopaedic Fellowships. Mr Shankarappa was  awarded the Khazenifar Gold Medal for the Best Performance in the M.Ch.Ortho., Liverpool Exam. He has worked in the UK since 1989 and as a Consultant in the UK since 1993.

Mr Shankarappa specialises in lower limb adult orthopaedics, undertaking Hip replacements - cemented and uncemented. He also performs total knee replacements, including patient matched technology (Signature Knee Replacement).

Wherever suitable he advocates the Oxford Unicondylar knee replacement (which he has used for fifteen years) which preserves a major part of the natural knee and provides a natural feel to a partially replaced knee. He advocates the Puddu open wedge Knee corrective osteotomy to correct deformity secondary to arthritis or trauma to preserve the natural joint mechanics.

He also performs:  Knee Arthroscopic surgery, meniscal repair, cruciate ligament reconstruction (using single tendon quadrupled hamstring all inside reconstruction), knee articular surface damage repair surgery (including modern techniques of microdrilling), cartilage grafting , mosaicplasty and osteoarticular transfer surgery (OATS)— to preserve the natural knee and prevent rapid onset of crippling osteoarthritis. He has been performing OATS surgery for 15 years , helping to preserve the patients natural joint and avoid early prosthetic knee joint replacement. He also performs surgery on the instability of the patella with soft tissue and bony reconstruction for this condition.
