Mr Vivek Balachandar is a Consultant Knee Surgeon specialising in the management of knee injuries, arthritis, and patella instability. He helps patients relieve pain, restore movement and stability, and return to normal life as quickly and safely as possible.
His surgical practice is solely focused on knee surgery. He has specialist experience in conditions ranging from acute ACL and meniscal injuries to longer-term conditions such as arthritis. He regularly manages sports knee injuries across disciplines including football, rugby, hockey, netball, CrossFit, and motorsport, alongside patients with pain and symptoms affecting everyday life.
Mr Balachandar ensures patients have a clear understanding of their diagnosis and treatment options. Not all patients require surgery, and treatments are carefully considered tailored to each individual. Surgery may be recommended if a patients symptoms are not relieved by non-surgical treatment and interfere with their lifestyle, hobbies, work or sporting activity.
Mr Balachandar trained at Sheffield Medical School and completed his specialist orthopaedic training in Sheffield. He undertook advanced fellowship training at the Wrightington Sports Knee Unit, a leading centre for knee surgery in the UK. He is currently a Consultant at Barnsley NHS Foundation Trust and has established a dedicated Soft Tissue Knee and Knee Preservation service.
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Balachandar is actively involved in teaching, training, and research. He has presented work nationally and internationally, was awarded the prestigious South Yorkshire ‘Getty Plate’ for excellence in orthopaedic research, and was selected to represent the region at the British Orthopaedic Association ‘Best of the Best’ meeting in 2023. He holds a degree in Sport and Exercise Medicine from London.
Having played competitive hockey for over 20 years, including at national league level, he has a strong understanding of the demands of sport, rehabilitation, and recovery following injury and surgery.
