About Mr Vijay Hegde

Personal Profile

Mr Vijay Hegde is a highly experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist with over 25 years of expertise in eye care. He has been a consultant since 2010 and continues to provide specialist treatment at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Mr Hegde has completed advanced training in both cataract surgery and retinal surgery. He undertook surgical fellowships in Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester, and Aberdeen. 

This extensive training allows him to manage both routine and complex cataract surgeries, such as the no-needle (topical) procedure. Mr Hegde specialises in complex cataract surgery. He regularly performs no-needle (topical) cataract procedures, helping to improve patient comfort. His personalised treatment plan approach often involves micro-incision surgical techniques along with a wide range of intraocular lens options to help reduce the need for patients requiring glasses after surgery
 
He also offers advanced vitreoretinal surgery using sutureless, local anaesthetic vitrectomy techniques, which can support faster recovery.
 

Teaching and leadership roles

Mr Hegde a recognised surgical trainer for both cataract and vitreoretinal surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He also plays a key role in education, training medical students, nurses, and optometrists, as well as serving as a faculty examiner at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.

Mr Hegde is also the Clinical Lead for Ophthalmology in NHS Grampian and supports young doctors training within his capacity as Foundation Programme Director. He has been Regional Advisor for Royal College of Ophthalmology.

In addition to his clinical work, Mr Hegde is an active contributor to the field through numerous publications and presentations.

Mr Hegde advises patients attending a consultation for cataract surgery to please bring with you to the appointment:

  • Your glasses (if you have)
  • Your glasses prescription (if you have)
  • A list of medications, including any eye medications. 
  • Your pupils will likely be dilated at the consultation, and you will not be able to drive immediately afterwards, therefore please make alternative travel arrangements.
  • Your appointment can last about 1 to 1.5 hours (irrespective of the length of the consultation slot)
