Suresh Thomas is Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon working at County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust, and also practising at Woodlands Hospital.

Training

Mr Thomas underwent his higher surgical orthopaedic training from Northeast England. He then underwent further fellowship training in hip and knee replacements from the University of Toronto, the prestigious centre for hip surgery, Wrightington, UK and then the Golden Jubilee Hospital, Glasgow. 

He was awarded the British Orthopaedic Association travelling fellowship to Endo-Klinik, Hamburg and University Hospital, Copenhagen, where he received training in rapid recovery programme following hip and knee replacements.

Practice

Mr Thomas’s clinical practice includes, management of lower limb disorders, including hip and knee pain/arthritis, hip and knee replacements, knee meniscal injuries and general trauma. Having done a masters in evidence-based orthopaedics, he is keen to discuss various options with patients including non-operative measures and discuss surgical treatment only if it would benefit patients.  He is keen for shared decision making and involving patients in the entire process of their management, discussing and offering the latest in evidence-based orthopaedics. His success measures following hip and knee surgery are reflected by the patient reported outcome measures (PROMS) within the NHS Trust and the outcome data collected by the National Joint Registry. 

Other roles

Mr Thomas has a keen interest in academic activities and is actively involved in teaching. He is the Royal College tutor for surgical trainees at County Durham Darlington NHS and is an orthopaedic surgical trainer. He is a faculty member at FRCS (Orth) preparatory courses. He has numerous presentations at national and international meetings, including the British Orthopaedic Association, European Orthopaedics, Canadian Orthopaedics and American Academy. Suresh Thomas has several publications as first author and have co-authored a FRCS Orth book chapter.
