About Dr Sundip Patel

Personal Profile

Dr Sundip Patel qualified from the University of Wales, College of Medicine in 1992. He undertook his specialist training in cardiology on the London Deanery Training Programme, principally at St Thomas’ Hospital. During this time, he received full training in all aspects of adult cardiology including coronary angiography (cardiac catheterisation), permanent pacemaker implantation, echocardiography (transthoracic and transoesophageal).

During his research training fellowship, he investigated the use of non-invasive techniques to assess vascular function enabling the prediction of cardiovascular risk. The findings of this research have been published and presented at peer-reviewed national and international cardiovascular meetings.

After being awarded a sub-specialty interventional cardiology training fellowship at St Thomas’ Hospital, he received comprehensive, high-quality exposure and training in all aspects of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI, angioplasty-stenting etc.).

He was appointed as Consultant Cardiologist in 2005 and assisted in the establishment of the local coronary angioplasty service at QE-W. He is currently Clinical Lead for Invasive Cardiology at QE-W.

Clinical Interests

Dr Patel manages and investigates patients with general heart-related (cardiac) problems e.g. chest pain, palpitations, dizzy spells, breathlessness and murmurs. He however has a particular interest in the following:

  • Cardiovascular risk management e.g. high cholesterol (hyperlipidaemia), high blood pressure (hypertension).
  • Angina and heart attacks (acute coronary syndromes, myocardial infarction, ischaemic and coronary heart disease).
  • Coronary angioplasty and stenting (percutaneous coronary intervention PCI, radial access procedures, intravascular ultrasound, pressurewire and rotational atherectomy).
