Personal Profile

Dr Shoaib Hamid is a Consultant Cardiologist with more than twenty years of experience in managing all aspects of cardiovascular disease including ischaemic heart disease, arrhythmias, hypertension and heart failure. 

Dr Hamid qualified in 1994 from St George’s Hospital Medical School, London. He undertook his general cardiology training in the London Deanery Training Programme and completed his sub-specialty fellowship training in Arrhythmias and Device Therapy at St George’s and Guys and St Thomas’ Hospitals. He has attained accreditation from the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE) as a Certified Cardiac Device Specialist.

During his cardiology training he was awarded a British Heart Foundation Research Fellowship which was undertaken at the Inherited Cardiac Conditions Unit at St George’s Hospital Medical School, a national referral unit. Dr Hamid investigated and gained clinical experience in inherited heart conditions causing cardiomyopathies and sudden cardiac death for which he was awarded his MD degree by the University of London. He has continued his contribution to research as a local principal investigator in multi-centre clinical trials. He has published and presented research at national and international meetings on cardiomyopathies, pacemakers and cardiac resynchronisation therapy. 

He is a Consultant Cardiologist and Clinical Director of Cardiology at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. He is involved in general cardiology providing specialist care for cardiology inpatients and outpatient clinics.  Dr Hamid is clinical lead for the Arrhythmia, Devices and Inherited Cardiovascular Diseases services. After being appointed, he developed a multi-disciplinary team to diagnose and treat patients with heart rhythm conditions including establishing a new complex cardiac pacemaker and defibrillator implantation and follow-up service. He performs a high volume of pacemaker and complex device implantations.

Dr Hamid is active in under- and post-graduate medical education. He is the local Educational Lead for the medical student Vascular Block and is Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the King's College London GKT School of Medical Education. He has undertaken Educational Supervision of post-graduate trainees and trains cardiology specialist registrars in implanting pacemakers and complex devices.

Dr Hamid manages heart conditions including:

  • Ischaemic heart disease (coronary artery disease, chest pain, angina and heart attacks) 
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Heart failure (breathlessness and fluid retention)

His specialist interest is in heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias) including:

  • Investigation and management of palpitations, dizzy spells, syncope and blackouts
  • Management of arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation
  • Implantation of pacemakers for slow heart rates (bradycardias) and heart failure (cardiac resynchronisation therapy)
  • Implantation of defibrillators (ICDs) for ventricular arrhythmia
