Shawn undertook his basic medical training in the West Indies. His post-graduate training was done on the Oxford Trauma and Orthopaedic training rotation (Stoke Mandeville Hospital, John Radcliffe Hospital, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and Royal Berkshire Hospital) from 1993 to 2000.
His fellowship training in knee surgery was carried out at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital and Imperial College London in 1998.
Mr Tavares was appointed Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading in October 2000. He went on to become Clinical Director in the Orthopaedic Department from 2004-2007, and Clinical Governance lead from 2008-2011. He has been the Enhanced Recovery Lead for hip and knee replacement surgery since 2010 and joined CircleReading in 2012.
Shawn is an avid sports fan and cricket cognoscenti. He is former National Junior and Senior chess champion of Trinidad and Tobago, and represented Trinidad and Tobago at 2 world junior chess championships and a chess Olympiad.
