Mr Shahid Punwar is a leading consultant orthopaedic surgeon in London who is an expert in hip and knee replacement, partial knee replacements, sports knee injuries, ACL reconstruction and meniscal surgery. He specialises in joint replacements and sports surgery as well as general orthopaedic trauma. He has particular interests in rapid recovery following joint replacement surgery and day case arthroplasty.

Training

Mr Punwar graduated from the Imperial College School of Medicine London in 2001 and completed his specialist orthopaedic training in Bristol. He received his fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons (Eng) in 2012. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Following his graduation in 2001, he went on to undertake his basic surgical training in Kent and the London area before completing his specialist orthopaedic training on the prestigious Bristol rotation. Mr Punwar then undertook a year of complex arthroplasty and sports injury training in Perth, Western Australia, before returning to the UK and being appointed as a consultant trauma & orthopaedic surgeon at Torbay Hospital in beautiful South Devon.

Practice

Mr Punwar is a fellowship trained Knee and Hip surgeon and has been a substantive NHS Orthopaedic Consultant since March 2015. He has been a Consultant at University Hospital Lewisham since Sept 2019 and Clinical Director since Sept 2022. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Kings College London and has an honorary contract at Guy’s Hospital, where he performs revision knee arthroplasty.

One popular procedure Mr Punwar carries out is ACL reconstruction; this is the repairing of a torn ACL which is a key ligament in the knee. The procedure is usually performed as a day case, allowing patients to return home the same day. Most patients are off crutches and engaged in physiotherapy rehabilitation within six weeks.

Research

Mr Punwar has authored 15 peer-reviewed scientific articles, which are available on PubMed. His research focuses on optimising the timing of surgery for ACL and meniscal injuries, aiming to improve patient outcomes. Additionally, he is dedicated to exploring methods for rapid recovery following hip and knee replacements, contributing valuable insights to the field of orthopedic surgery.

Teaching

Mr. Punwar has been listed on the General Medical Council's specialist register since July 2014. In addition, he is a GMC-recognized educational trainer, responsible for instructing the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons. He plays a key role in examining and supervising medical students at King's College London. As a regular faculty member for educational courses run by Orthopaedic Research UK, he also contributes to professional development in the field. Moreover, he is a member of the British Association of Knee Surgeons.

In his personal life, Mr Punwar enjoys a variety of activities that keep him both physically and mentally engaged. For example, he is an avid cyclist and walker, finding joy in exploring the outdoors. He also enjoys playing chess and the guitar.
